I did not find this book to be useful at all, but I can see how it would help other parents. Our babe was not colicky or fussy and 90% of this book did not apply to her. Karp's main points are easily found on the internet or in videos and can be learned in 5 minutes instead of reading this book when you have a newborn. Personally, I'd skip it, unless you find yourself with a colicky baby and need some help/reassurance and have a few hours to read this.

I ordered this after our baby was already born, as I hadn't heard about it beforehand. I like that he tells you which chapters to skip to if you're short on time. However, I knew my husband wasn't going to read any parts of this and ordered the DVD for him. If I had to do this again, I would skip the book and just get the DVD. It was very helpful, gave you all the information in about 20 minutes and it helped to have the author show you the techniques on real babies, including how fast it works on them!

Don't bother purchasing the book. You can google the information about the 5S (swaddle, sucking, shushing, swaying/swing, and side/stomach). The entire book just repeats these over and over and over. It could have been a 15 page book.

As a new mom, I was really tired and frustrated when my newborn cried a lot. I searched the internet and saw many people mentioned about this book. So I decided to give it a try and I'm really glad I did!This is a good book. Dr.Karp made it enjoyable and easy to read. The 5Ss is great and with these I can calm my baby easily. Yes, you can just skip through most parts of the book and go straight for the 5S. But I enjoy reading the additional details as well as the explanation provided about the safety of each S (e.g. is it safe jiggling the baby? is it safe to swaddle the 3-month-old baby?) and I ended up reading the whole book. So all in all, I think this is a book a parent should read.Tip - If reading a book does not give you the whole picture, you can find a video (I think it was a TV show with Dr.Karp as a guest) to see how the 5Ss should be done.

BUY THIS BOOK it is essential if you're a new parent. I've torn through this book for my daughter (who's 6 days old at time of this writing), and my ability to quiet her down in under 10 seconds has amazed my friends and family. Everyone thinks I'm a baby savant or have had previous kids, but I'm simply following the "5 S's" in this book and it works like a charm.Great tips, recommendations, humor, and myth-busting in this book. Also an easy read to cruise through during nursing (like me) or while rocking your little one with one hand.

First off, I completely believe that the techniques in here are going to be a lifesaver. Every nurse, pediatrician, or midwife I've talked to has recommended these techniques. However, putting them into a book is really stretching the material, and involves a LOT of repetition of the same stories and arguments over and over. This could be condensed into a pamphlet. In fact, I just finished watching Dr. Karp explain the entire book in a six-minute spot on a daytime TV show (found for free on the Internet).As an expectant parent who wants to be well informed, I have a lot of books on my reading list. This took up way more time than it should have. If you're a new/expecting parent, do yourself a favor and find this info for free on the Internet. If you want to buy this as a gift, do the expectant parents a favor and get the DVD or instant video instead.

As a new parent - and someone who has never been good with babies - I welcomed this potential "instruction manual" for my baby. I learned much more than what the 5 S's are and how to perform them to calm my baby. By reading this book, I also gained some insight into my poor crying baby's mind - helping me to empathize with him even more but to stop blaming myself for every whimper, thinking I must be doing something wrong. I read this book after my baby was born and in full-fledged fourth trimester (it was recommended by his pediatrician), but I would encourage expecting Moms to start reading it now... but save it as a reference for when your baby arrives. Maybe all babies don't experience the fourth trimester...but mine is definitely going through it. I pray we make it through!!! LOL

Especially for new parents, this is a great confidence-building book. Rather than just listing the myriad things that can go wrong and touting warnings about extreme and excessive crying that parents just have to put up with until baby turns 3 months old, this book actually provides sensible strategies to get started on the right foot. Will definitely be keeping this on hand for when our little guy makes his appearance.

Great solutions for improved sleep and I think understanding why the 5 S's work will make me better at calming my baby. I'm feeling more confident and ready to tackle the 4th trimester!

I really appreciated the content of the book, but felt like the digits version wasn't edited. There are several typos, incomplete sentences, incorrect information, etc. It also seemed like many sections assumed an understanding of the vocabulary; "oyster marks", "veiling", and other terminology would have been easier understood wth examples. Again, great content, but lacking in clarity in the digital version. Also, I'm not finding the access to the videos mentioned. I will go back and look, but the website didn't make it clear how to arrive at the videos.

Quinn is a great guy and well respected in the collodion world. I spent nearly a year amassing equipment and chemistry to begin making wet plates. Although I felt very confident after scouring the internet for articles and videos, this text really helped me. I read it cover to cover a few times over and when I decided I was ready to make my first plate everything came out exactly as I had hoped. If you join a collodion forum you'll see people's "first plates" and you can tell who decided to invest in a proper manual and who didn't. Don't make the mistake of trying to wing it, this is a small price to pay for a text that will save you a great deal of money if you happen to make mishaps with your chemistry, your silver bath, or any other types of contamination that can ruin your art and cost you hundreds of dollars. Thanks Quinn!

This is a well thought out, useful guide to making wet-plate positive images. Full details on making your own chemistry are included along with explanations of the chemical hazards.

Very comprehensive and pretty easy to understand IF you already have a good grasp on basic photo chemistry and developing techniques. I highly recommend this book as a primer for anyone interested in learning the wet plate collodion process.

Really in depth book on this historic photographic process. Jacobson shares his personal insight on the imporance of this type of photography. Well written commentary on what you need to know to learn collodion process.

I read this book as a boy 38 years ago and recently read it with my son, and regretfully the story today is still valid of the suspicions and fears white people have of black people, no matter how charming and helpful black people are. I was hoping this story would be read as historical hindsight, but sadly very little, if anything, has changed. I highly recommended it as a lesson in how and why to give up prejudice and see people as they are and not what unfounded suspicions and fears dictate.

I remember reading this in the sixth grade and absolutely loving this book. It is a very touching story about survival, friendship and faith. I highly recommend this book.

Whew! This book was sooo good! I had to read it with my daughter for school and each night, as we read farther and farther I got more and more involved. I was a blubbering mess at the end. It was a great coming of age story and we highly recommend it.

Loved it as a boy, loved reading it to my kids at bedtime. The plot moves quickly enough for the young ones and the themes are valuable for all ages.

You know there are some sloppy book that get printed in mass "book order" production. Ha, who cares..they're for kids, right?! Well, if it doesn't bother you..the odd feeling pages and the almost typewriter over inked print..then this book will do. Obviously story is a classic for kids! Has mystery, suspense, friendship and golden message...just quality is reflective of the price point. My 6th grader won't mind..he just HAS to read for class!

Excellent book! Used it in my homeschool literature class of 5th and 6h grade students. Enjoyed the pace of the story, as well as the themes running throughout. Takes place during WW II and tells of the friendship of Timothy and Philip, who find themselves stranded after an explosion on the boat carrying them away to safety.

A boy who is raised around people who are racists is shipwrecked at sea with an elderly Jamaican man. He has to confront internally what he was raised to believe as his eyes and ears are gradually opened to the reality. Superficially this is a story of survival at sea and on a deserted island as well as dealing with dangerous storms. That makes for a great adventure. But the real significance is the boy's overcoming prejudice and embracing the old man who teaches him so much. My 8 year old loved it. It opened up frank conversations about the bad old days when black people were treated badly and how people still wrestle with their embedded prejudices.

This book is a "must read" for kids and adults. It illustrates unconscious racial prejudice and the strength of friendship, love and sacrifice. There are few books that I agree are modern classics but this is definitely one. Fit this in among the Warrior Cats nonsense that is questionable in its value as literature. I laughed and cried during this book. It shows how boundaries and difficulties can be overcome with love and loyalty.

I gave 4 stars for the projects and overall quality of info in the book. As for the Kotlin section, forget it! Not one author here nor anywhere else has a clue how to put together a decent basic Kotlin course. Every author assumes the reader has a few years of Java under their belt but to be fair this book does not claim to teach beginning basics of programming with Kotlin. I needed a good book in a jam and this one is great project wise! I did need some material for beginning programming in Kotlin, but alas, it does not exist in print. It's amazing how much support there is for Swift vs Kotlin

I'm working through this book now and am thoroughly enjoying the experience.The author mixed concepts and working code examples in a way that is very helpful. And, the author provided broad coverage of Android topics.I'm a new Android developer, and have worked through many chapters of several books. So far, this book has been *much* better than all of those other books.

Good explanation of Android development using Android Studio and Kotlin. I found that I had to re-read some of the text before I understood properly, but it provided the information I needed. Also provides several chapters on learning Kotlin. Good overall book. Recommended.

The recipes included are simple to prepare, even for a middling cook such as myself, and will please any palate. While this book does not have an extremely large number of recipes I found that to be a plus for it. I can easily become overwhelmed when a cookbook has so many recipes and I am trying to make a decision for now or tomorrow. With the variations she suggests for them (such as gluten-free as well as ingredient substitutions) there are more ideas here than first apparent. Add in the tendency most of us have to make our own (often ill-advised) changes this collection of recipes will allow a new Mediterranean diet follower to ease into a delicious diet or simply offer the cook who wants something different some great alternatives. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys eating and also enjoys preparing healthy delicious meals.

I've tried several of the recipes since receiving my copy and all have been excellent. If you're at all interested in Mediterranean food, this is one book you have to have on your shelf. I have cooked several dishes from this book and my family loved them all. I really love that the dishes are not time consuming to prepare and that I can find all the ingredients quite easily. This is a cookbook that has great recipes to try, but which also educates and encourages as well. For anyone who loves Mediterranean food this is a must addition to your cookbook collection, and for anyone who wants to eat a healthy diet this is a great way to go! Nice read.

This is a bogus cookbook. I think the author just added black olives to a recipe to make it seem Mediterranean. Also, recipes are incomplete - with either missing ingredients or instructions. For instance, one recipe in the dessert section was titled “Fig and Orange” that’s all .... is it pudding? Cake? What? In the ingredients list there were some figs, but no mention of anything orange. Crazy. I sent it back.

Some of the recipe directions fall short of offering complete steps that can followed. I would look for a quality cookbook from a well known author.

I am always looking for healthy, easy and quick recipes. And this book explains Mediterranean dieting very well and book has a great mix of recipes sorted out by breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Recipes in this book are easy to prepare and follow. The best part is that this diet inspired by countries such as Spain, Italy and Greece who all agree on diet high in fish, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, olive oil, and my favorite, a glass of wine, thats the life that i like. Thank you and enjoy your meal and your day.

My daughter and I enjoy picture book biographies and I particularly like reading stories about the fight for civil rights. We owe so much to these brave suffragettes and I think it is important to remember that 1920 was really not so long ago. My daughter seems to find the idea that there was a time when women could not vote incomprehensible. I am glad of course she finds it so hard to believe but I do think we still have a way to go which makes it even more important to remember where we have been.

This beautiful children's picture book tells the story of a major civil rights champion who has never gotten her due. Alice Paul was instrumental in winning women the right to vote in the United States in 1920-a victory that had eluded her forebear Susan B Anthony. "Miss Paul and the President" tells the story of Paul's creative attempts to convince President Woodrow Wilson and the American public that women's suffrage was long overdue. Kids will appreciate Alice's playful approach to promoting the cause, including spectacular parades, a long petition unfurled on the Capitol steps, and pickets in front of the White House. While remaining true to the facts, author Dean Robbins turns Paul's campaign into a dramatic adventure story that will immediately appeal to young readers. Two couples occupy adjacent homes. Both men suffer from an obscure degenerative disease. The women try to cope with the effects of it on their marriages and aren’t finding it easy. Nor do the men help. The one man seems to have lost affect: he either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care what his wife is going through as life closes in on them. She remembers a better past between them but it isn’t there any more. What should she do? For the duration of this play, which presents a slice of their life, not their whole life, she drifts between temptation and duty. At the end of the play, it’s not all that clear which side she’s come down on, but probably duty. The other couple is more bohemian but not all that much: social conventions weigh in on all these people. So there’s a little almost-flirting, nothing much happens, and at the end of the play, things are pretty much like they are at the beginning. But isn’t that the way most of life is? Along the way, using ordinary, not poeticized, language, playwright Eno produces affecting images of loss.

A really good play by a really good playwright and performer. How long has it been when you've gone to see a play and never felt you knew what it was "about" and enjoyed it so much, you were glad its "aboutness" was so illusory or like, hey, real life. Or Chekhov?

I enjoy spending time making craft with my kids, nieces and nephews. This is sure a great way to keep them entertained and expand their imagination. The clay creations in the book are easy to follow and super cute. I recommend it!

My daughter is always building things.I catch her taking things out of the recycling all the time. LolShe recently received clay as a present and loves it.We got her this book and it shows you how to make animals.You just need to have toothpicks on hand.She has made quite a few animals from it.It was a good choice.

Awesome book! My granddaughter loves to work with clay! She's really used this book to make these cute animals! The instructions are very clear even for our 8 year old granddaughter!

Great step by step pictures. My 11 yr old granddaughter loved it. Got it for her to have ideas and directions to start making POLYMER CLAY animals. This book is for MODELING CLAY and some of the animal add on parts are not bake-able. She figured other ways or added items after baking.

My daughter LOVED this book and has made almost every animal in it. It also inspired her to create her own too. Easy to follow - although hard to match the finished product in the book.

Super cute illustrated book on how to make different animals. My neice was super excited about this present along with her clay and the shaping kit. She made several cute animals, and told me that the book directions were super easy to use! Would recommend!
