My Badass Book of Saints: Courageous Women Who Showed Me How to Live, by Maria Morera Johnson Pat Gohn

Review

"Johnson, host of the popular podcast Catholic Weekend and blogger at CatholicMom.com, offers readers an exploration of inspiring women past and present who challenged the status quo, served Christ wholeheartedly, and continue to inspire women today. She blends her own story with those of courageous women who became saints, who will likely become saints, and who arguably ought to be saints. She explores such virtues as courage through the lives of WWII spy Nancy Wake and St. Joan of Arc; perseverance through author Flannery O'Connor and St. Margaret of Antioch; peace via Immaculee Ilibagiza and St. Rita of Cascia; and virtue through the most virtuous of all, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Every story challenges, informs, and encourages as Johnson interweaves discussions about how we can live and thrive similarly to these women today. Chapters end with questions and an action step; the book ends with a six-week guide for further study. Catholics--and women everywhere--will find something to love." (Dec.)--Publishers Weekly 10/12/2015"Maria Morera Johnson's My Badass Book of Saints delivers a heavyweight message of holiness with the lightest of touches and somehow manages a knockout punch. Her entertaining list of modern women of faith and their saintly counterparts exhorts women toward sainthood and says, 'Yes, this can be you, too, if you want it.' It's the wanting, after all--the pursuit of sainthood despite obstacles malicious or well-meant--that brings out the badass fearless trust that hones a saint." --Elizabeth Scalia, Catholic blogger and author of Strange Gods"Each of us has an opportunity to be a beacon of hope to those around us. Thank you, Maria, for writing and sharing this remarkable collection of courage and inspiration." --Immaculee Ilibagiza, Rwandan holocaust survivor and author of Left to Tell"In pages riddled with humor and gripping stories, I was shocked to realize that I shared qualities with great women I always thought were out of my league. In the lives of these ordinary, sometimes feisty, women I found my story, and as many of them are now saints, I found an incredible conviction to live my ordinary life loving God and allowing him to do extraordinary things through me . . . with a little help from my new friends!" --Kelly Wahlquist, Founder of Women In the New Evangelization and author of Created to Relate"This is a book that's not afraid to talk of the beautiful mess, where faith meets real life, where saints and mortals coexist, one cheering the other on to glory." --Pat Gohn, Author of Blessed, Beautiful, and Bodacious"Maria Johnson is a badass. As she shares herself in these pages, her stories--and those of these courageous women--inspire us to believe that our own sometimes seemingly ordinary lives and what we do with them can be enough. For ourselves and for God." -- --Shelly Henley Kelly & Lisa Henley Jones, Catholic bloggers and contributors to CatholicMom.com

Maria Morera Johnson sets out to show us saints in a new way. I was surprised by her age given the name of the book, but that was great. Each chapter shows a canonized saint, an every day person and a bit of her own fascinating life. There are also questions for reflection with each chapter. I met some new saints and some new people, but also met some old ones in new ways. I read this book on All Saints Day and the homily that morning was how we are all called to be saints, yes most of us won't be canonized by the Church, but getting to heaven is the goal. This book dovetailed nicely in seeing how we can do our bit and not to be discouraged and give up because we won't be St Helena discovering the True Cross and maybe instead we are the nun who told cowboys to get the sheriff not the lynch mob or maybe the teacher who actually listens and impacts someone life. All the small things we can each do do matter and are what add up to the world and to our own best selves. Great book, fun read, real sense of personality

Maria Morera Johnson showed me how to coax the best of my badass self away from the shadows and into the light. She conveys new meaning to bringing out your feminine side. While this book was written from a capital “C” Catholic perspective, you don’t have to be Catholic to savor the meaning and presentation of the book. “My badass book of saints” provides a small “c” catholic perspective to courageous living that shows it’s OK be less than perfect in striving to live a Christian life. While reading the different chapters, my responses ranged from tears to laughter. The tears came from examples of the absolute beauty of the heights the human spirit can achieve. The laughter came from the juxtaposition of the sacred and the slightly naughty. And yes, there is a saint of hangovers. There’s also the image of “nuns toting guns” that brings on a quick twitch of the lips. Both the tears and laughter buoyed and cleansed my spirit by showing that even the saints weren’t perfect. They didn’t start out as saints, either. The author weaves the lives of extraordinary and “ordinary” women around a central theme of each chapter. The saints are, of course, extraordinary, but they all started out as ordinary girls who somehow rose to achieve amazing acts of courage and grace in very hostile circumstances. The author contrasts these lives with the lives of the “ordinary” or “not-sainted” women who also rose to confront grave conditions. Some of these women are the author’s own ancestors and relatives. Others highlight minor historical figures. But each life – both extraordinary and “ordinary” – demonstrates the capacity to break through heartbreaking challenges to achieve spiritual peace. If they can do it, there’s hope for the rest of us.Woven throughout the book, the author shares her own story. Like most of us, her life is a mixture of heartbreak and happiness with lots of ordinary times in between. Her story shows how the hard times and the blessings joined with humor to take her on a journey of deepening faith. The women in this book followed different paths and faced different trials, but all increased their faith by confronting their challenges. The courageous and the faithful can face their struggles knowing they are following God’s will. But as the author says, “…holiness does not come from doing heroic deeds; rather, holiness comes from doing God’s will perfectly.” In the end, this book provides hope for the less than heroic and the less than perfect. Striving to do God’s will is the best any of us can do – some just seem to have a knack for doing it better than the rest of us. God bless the saints and Maria Morera Johnson for writing this book.

I thought this was going to be an exciting, in-depth look at the lives of female saints that would be empowering and inspirational. It's mostly a (pretty boringly presented) collection of anecdotes from the author's own life with very little information about these badass women she is supposed to be educating us about. I good about 70% through and had to give up. The writing style and reading level would be better suited for a middle school audience--except that there's a curse word in the title. I tried to push through this one but I wish I'd given up sooner so I could have moved on to something better!

The foreword says that women of holy influence come in many different ways, which help them come to their faiths in God.At the end of each chapter is a trio of questions to ponder. Then, at the back of the book, is a set of questions designed for a six-week study. I really like that! While I see such things in similar books, I didn't expect it in this one. I guess it's because of the title ;)Johnson pairs one female non-Saint with one female Saint (except for chapter 9, where a Blessed takes the place of a Saint). Not all the women are Catholic, but each shows tenacity, perseverance, and different forms of strength. I didn't realize until about 42% of the way in that this is what a true Catholic feminist book is. Johnson takes her life and relates it to each of the women. And, as a teacher, I can relate to her desire to be the best and help everyone.-Sister Blandina Segale, a gun-toting sister from the Old West, sounds fascinating. "I have a soft spot in my heart for nuns toting guns." - Page 1. She faced Billy the Kid thrice in her life!- Nancy Wake sounds like she was a wonderful woman- I didn't realize St. Catherine of Sienna's mother had 25 children. Holy cow!- Phyllis Bowman, the founder of the United Kingdom's Right to Life, is someone I have NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE. She essentially sparked the worldwide pro-life movement, which is fantastic.- Audrey Hepburn's history was definitely not something I knew. It's no wonder she faded away. What a wonderful woman. The book concludes with a wonderful focus on Mary

This makes for an easy read for a women's religious study group. The author introduces and connects themes with anecdotes from her own life. She then draws parallels from the lives of lay women (albeit famous) to those of female Saints and provides relevant discussion question and points to ponder at the end of each chapter. As a women living in these times, it's challenging to say the least, to fully know how to live a Christ-centered life while fulfilling personal needs for accomplishment and meaning in our modern lives. When our nation and society continues to tell us our worth is only a fraction that of a man, this book helps to keep us centered for true fulfillment through our faith and not through arbitrarily assigned societal standards.

I really love this book, and it was way better than I expected. I thought there would be a couple of links and pointers but basically I'd have to figure out how to get into the Technical Writing field on my own. What I particularly like about this guide is that each chapter ends with a series of questions or research topics for the reader to complete. The reader is encouraged to keep a notebook or computer document where he or she addresses these questions. They aren't silly, busy-work questions, either -- they're very useful and compel the reader to think hard about the direction he or she wants her Technical Writing career to take. This book is addressed towards people who are not yet in the field of Technical Writing, but I think it could be useful for someone whose Technical Writing career needs a fresh direction, or for anyone who fell into the field accidentally and wants pointers on how to network. I especially liked the list of alternate job titles for Technical Writers. This is so helpful for job-hunters because employers frame similar skills in many different ways, and it's exciting to realize that there are actually plenty of opportunities for which I am qualified but I wasn't searching classifieds with the correct terminology.

This little book was surprisingly good! At first I was astonished by its small size, but as I read I realized it contained everything I needed to know. I will refer to it often. I compare it to The Elements of Style by Strunk & White - both in size and coverage of their respective subjects. Good job, James Gill!

This is basically the equivalent to taking a single "What is technical writing" class at a local continuing education school. It doesn't have a lot of depth and it's very high level. The author wrote a gentle easy to read guide and shouldn't be criticized for it but if you've even looked into doing technical writing on any level, then you know most of this stuff already. It's not new information and it's not entirely relevant for all areas. One area that was surprising to me, in its lack of relevancy was the question of working permanent or working contract. In most areas now, perm positions are the holy grail and exceptionally difficult to get. Nearly all jobs for tech writers are contract based positions. It's cheaper and it makes it easier to get rid of people not working out.Chapter Four - Five Must-Have Skills provided a nice list of things you should know and a few resources that can help you. I think this was one of the better sections of the book.Chapter Six - "How do I get more experience?" was also a valuable chapter with some excellent resources and suggestions. This section, combined with the actual resources list in the back of the book was the redeeming factors of the book.I appreciate the time and effort the author took to write the book but don't really feel it is a valuable resource that I'll turn to when getting my career on track. It gave some good ideas but it really felt like a long blog post to me.

This book is a clear, concise look at what technical writing is all about. The author struck a chord with me when he said he discovered that engineers tend to love math, whereas he sees math as just part of the problem-solving process. I'll never be a whiz in math and science, but many people have told me that I have good written and verbal language skills. I now plan to minor in technical writing to compliment my major in mechanical engineering. When I graduate, I hope to be able to not only understand mechanical engineering, but summarize and translate that knowledge into language non-engineers can understand. That is the advantage of being a good technical writer. There are many people who are brilliant at engineering, but not many of them have good communication skills. Technical writers are in demand (with salaries roughly equal to engineering salaries) because they can bridge that gap. Excellent book.

Useful info I'm using while I prepare for a career as a technical writer.

Concise, seasoned approach to anyone interested in becoming a Technical Writer. The generosity of the authors experience is invaluable and worth 1,000x the price of this guide. This "how to" guide provides salient steps on how to pursue a career as diverse as your interests. I've been performing similar functions on a voluntary basis. I will now happily pursue getting paid for what I already enjoy doing!

I liked the book because it has very good suggestions about building a portfolio and building a foundation for the interview process. I also liked the activities at the end of the chapters. I would only say the book talks in generalities and doesn't discuss the actual software programs, but does provide links.

This book offers great tips on how to become a technical writer, which is not easy to do if you are not already an engineer of some sort but merely a writer. I have thumbed through it and will put the tips into practice, no luck in the past breaking into this field but I have hopes now!
