This wide-ranging study of the ``heroic age of scientific classification'' attempts--with only partial success--to place the taxonomic advances and prejudices of 18th- and 19th-century England in a broader cultural context. MIT historian Ritvo (The Animal Estate, 1987) first analyzes the politics and ``broader allegiances'' that clouded the objectivity of zoologists who embraced the gargantuan task of ordering the biological world, even as British imperialism was rapidly expanding their knowledge of that world. The author exhaustively details the unprofessional behavior scientists resorted to for personal gain (such as needlessly inventing new species and naming them after their employers). Then she expands her definition of taxonomy to include the informal classification of animals by amateur naturalists, groups with specialized relationships to animals (like farmers, breeders, hunters, and pet owners), and the general meat-eating public. Ritvo persuasively argues that ``each of the ways . . . people imagined, discussed, and treated animals inevitably implied some taxonomic structure.'' Her analysis of how British sportsmen classified wild animals as game or vermin points to a more fundamental and still prevalent assumption that nature exists solely for human entertainment. Similarly, her analysis of the conflicts between hunters, farmers, and pet owners over the proper role of wild animals describes a cultural battle yet raging. Too often, though, Ritvo shies away from social analysis with a sense of propriety rivaling that of her Victorian subjects. Her introduction notes that ``worries about the concupiscence of human females structured the theory and practice of animal breeding''; in the text these worries are mentioned only briefly, and Victorian attitudes about female sexuality are dodged entirely. This hit-and-miss social commentary, combined with a penchant for inflated academic language (allayed only slightly by period cartoons), sabotages Ritvo's goal of illuminating the cultural ramifications of Enlightenment zoology. Harriet Ritvo's The Platypus and the Mermaid (and other figments of the classifying imagination) is an interesting look at the Victorian passion for classifying things. The book ranges and prowls over many communities from the scientific to the farmer to the sideshow. This is more about the lack of firm boundaries in Victorian society as science tried to define itself than the author's whim. But the author does handle the twists and turns adroitly. This is a good read and a wonderful look at the Victorian period and what the scientist and the lay person considered important in their need to classify their world, particulary as it grew with the growth of the British Empire.

I really enjoyed this, actually! Honestly, it sounded a lot like something I would write. Everything is very metaphorical and poetic. Seeing as this novel is a scant 128 pages, a lot has to fit in there so there's a good amount of reading between the lines to be done. This was one of my favorite books that I have read for my program thus far, however. If you take the time to look into the beautiful sentence structure that makes up this book, the themes (mainly childhood and coming-of-age) are developed with impeccable skill. If you don't like that sort of thing, though, this will get very tiresome, very fast. At the beginning, I wasn't paying attention to the word choice and was instead frustrated by the lack of obvious overarching plot. While this is a full novel because of it chronology and overarching themes and characters, it could also make it's way in the world as a short story collection. You do have to look in order to see what's there. The author has said in interviews that the facts are autobiographical, but the incidents are fictionalized.We the Animals takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. Thatâ€™s a played-out description, I realize, but here it is apt. There were times when I laughed out loud and times when I felt sick to my stomach. Thereâ€™s a lot of love in this book, but thereâ€™s also betrayal and abuse and devastation.Reading this book feels vaguely voyeuristic. The book reads quite fast, with just over one-hundred pages, yet draws you in from the start and urges you to finish it in one setting. It is a deep novel that hurts to read and fully understand, yet provides a sense of guidance and acceptance, as you are reading, knowing that the author had the ability to grow up out of his troubled youth and share his story.

I love this book! I'm in the process of developing a product and it gave great insight not only the creative process of my idea, but also on what steps to take after the creative process. It teaches you some inexpensive ways to protect your product when sharing your idea to potential investors or distributors. This book also not only teaches you how to find and contact large distribution company's on your own, but it tells you what to do to build your confidence before contacting the companies you're most interested in. I'm developing a sporting goods product and I wanted to find a school to help me test and make any changes I may need to help me produce a great product for my market. So I used the techniques I learned from this book to call some schools and to my surprise! I was able to not only get the schools president on the phone and speak with him but he gave me his personal contact information and is willing to help me along the way!! It was so unexpected that my wife was in the background laughing at the shock on my face as it was happening.

I was thinking of taking a product to market myself. Then I realized all the time and money and overall responsibility it would take to run at company. I decided I'd rather let someone else of it. In the throes of that decision I came across this book and some of the youtube information. I loved the book, wished I had read it earlier but am so glad I read it now. My plans have changed. I'm working with Steven and his group, have a terrific mentor and everyday am excited. I am sure I'm going to licensing my current product and then there are more to come. Bottom line, great informative book that will serve you well whether you decide to go it on your own or work with Steven. Now matter how much business experience you think you have, the book and company will save you time time time and give you a laser focused way to license a product. I don't work for the White House so there is no conflict of interest if I say BUY THIS BOOK!

The author goes into great detail to explain the the ins and outs of licensing your product ideas to companies. I respected his thoroughness, energy and inspirational stories and it was an easy read. Only downside was it is a tad sugarcoated and he makes it seem like companies are just dying to hear from you and license your ideas. He also skipped over the fact that 90% of products fail to make any real money, so it takes a lot more than "One Simple Idea" to succeed at this game. More like one REALLY good idea.

This book is one of the best books on this subject. After reading this book and following Stephen and his co fonder, Andrew Krauss on YouTube, I signed up for their coaching on "inventRight.com." Since its publication, much of the globalization furor directed at Kathy Lee, McDonald's, Nike, Shell Oil, Pepsi, and others has died down or been redirected at health, local impact (e.g., Wal-Mart stores) and other important but ancillary issues (take, for example, the movie Super Size Me). The fact that the noise has subsided does not, however, mean that the problems Ms. Klein cites have disappeared. More likely, the companies subjected to such scathing public rebuke have better learned how to play the game, managing their PR more effectively and hiding further and further behind layers of subsidiaries, contractors, sub-contractors, and locked factory gates.No Logo is a significant work, deserving to be much better known than it is. American consumers -- that is, all of us -- need to reach a much better understanding of how brand management has evolved into culture management, how Starbucks and Nike and Gap and The Body Shop and so many other companies are infiltrating our subconscious and controlling our cultural dialogues. No Logo still serves as an eye-opener for those who have been spending so much time at the mall that they have not yet seen what is going on around them.Sadly, No Logo is not the most approachable of books for the general populace. It is over-long and over-detailed, bogging down in topics that are probably exciting to radical activists (like billboard jamming) but are sleep-inducing to most readers. Like many people who are involved in activism, Klein sometimes loses the forest for the trees, giving us so much insider detail about causes and people we don't know that we lose interest in, and attention to, her real message. My rating of only four stars, while certainly positive, derives from Klein's tendency to preach too much to the converted and spend too little time educating the as-yet unconverted.The book is divided into four sections: No Space, No Choice, No Jobs, and No Logo. The first two sections, encompassing the first eight chapters, are well worth the price of the book by themselves. Readers will come to a new understanding of how the public spaces around them are being manipulated by mega-corporate messaging, how those corporations hide behind a public face of social consciousness, and how violently they respond when anyone seeks to question their self-proclaimed high moral ground. I would recommend these eight chapters as required reading for every third- or fourth-year high school student in America. Chapter 16, "A Tale of Three Logos," is also a fascinating account of less than admirable behavior on the parts of Nike, Shell, and McDonald's, definitely worth reading.I can only hope that Ms. Klein will someday revisit her subject matter again, perhaps to publish a more streamlined and updated version that will reach a wider audience. She deserves the audience, and the American public needs to hear her voice. Despite her understandable tendency toward one-sidedness (perhaps necessary in this case to avoid being drowned out by Nike and McDonald's commercials and Starbucks ads), Naomi Klein's No Logo is an important book that all consuming Americans should read.

Amazing book. The author is explaining how corporations are taking over governments and people. She shows how the pseudo economical growth is destroying countries and social structures. Just read it!

Chapter 5Most horse owners are familiar with the rage and despair that accompanies the trudge round a large field of long dew-soaked grass in pursuit of their animal. Mollie kept on with her eating, an ear cocked for my soothing pleasantries and a sneer on her lips, until I was 10 feet or so away, then took off at a brisk trot. I’d left her head collar on just in case, but she understood the just in case perfectly well and made sure I was never within grabbing distance. “Come on Mollie, good girl!” I said in gentle horse-loving tones as I walked towards her with equicide in my heart. ...Filling a bucket with horse nuts I went back to the field and got exactly the same reaction. Mollie let me get a little closer and showed interest in the bucket’s contents but however stealthily I reached out my hand she always saw it coming and trotted off. However, my arrival with a bucket hadn’t gone unnoticed by the herd of bullocks in the neighbouring field and they galloped up and down the fence bellowing encouragement whenever I seemed to be approaching them. Eventually Mollie’s greed got the better of her and I managed to take hold of her head collar. Typically, once caught she accepted the situation with equanimity and I was able to clip on the lead rein and start for the gate. Here I was confronted with a new problem: Mollie’s gate led into the bullocks’ field where another gate, at right angles to the first, opened onto the road. Both were secured by the same piece of rope so either both were closed or both open. The bullocks were clustered excitedly by the gates waiting for me to deliver the goodies in the bucket. I had to tie Mollie to the gate-post and leave her eating her horse-nuts while I unfastened the rope securing the two gates. Then I propped both gates shut and started to climb back over the stone wall into Mollie’s field. The top boulders gave way. I fell heavily with a squawk of pain, Mollie took fright, pulled back and broke her lead rein, the gate swung open and three bullocks escaped into the road. I was near to tears. Chapter 11There were three rooms, so the kitchen/sitting room was also a store room, with bags of potatoes and farm implements stacked by the walls. The only furniture was a table, two or three hardback chairs and a settee. The floor was cement and tea water boiled on an ancient turf-burning stove. Apart from a religious painting and a calendar there was a 1940’s wireless that didn’t work and an even earlier clock with a loud tick. We spent such an agreeable evening together, drinking tea and eating brown bread. Mum sat snapping sticks for kindling while we discussed hospital care (“Oh God, I thought my heart would stop there and then”), the evils of television (“Oh Lord I wouldn’t have one in the house!”) to farming, marriage and whether politicians should tell the truth.

Reminiscent of Robyn Davidson's "Tracks" â€“ with rain. I was completely absorbed, cantering along beaches, struggling over stone walls and plodding through bogs with the adventurous author and her companion, a pony of great character. The ending I read through a mist of tears.

I was looking for more insight into Connemara and have no interest in horses, which it is really about. The writing is OK, just not what I was looking for.

Got some good ideas for places to visit in Ireland, but am not going by pony. Also got a good feel for the people the author met.

This is a book to inspire adventure travels. Through the very specific adventures that she had in traveling Ireland by horseback almost 30 years ago, Hilary Bradt brings to life the excitement of taking an unusual trip. What I found most enjoyable was that this is not a journey seen through the rosy view of 30-year-old reminiscences, remembering only the joys. It talks as much about the frustrations of traveling, especially alone - the days spent slogging in the rain, the evenings encroaching without knowing where to stay (and feeling intimidated by its challenges). And yet as a reader I felt the elation when the sun broke through or when a difficulty is solved by a kindly stranger. It is what I have experienced as a traveler when I am smart enough not to plan too much.The story is told well and in a straightforward manner, with flashes of humor at the situations she finds herself in. The connection between rider and horse grows as the story proceeds, and the bond is understood not through overstatement, but through the details of the adventure they shared. And so nothing prepares you for the ending; and you experience the shock as the author did.

Connemara Mollie is a gentle amble through Hilary Bradt's early years and on into the rain-lashed lushness of the emerald isle. I loved the image Bradt created for me with "green roads" and "rocky, gale-swept Connemara [where] a few hunch-backed trees leant away from the prevailing wind." It is a poignant portrait of the close relationship of trust and affection that develops between horse and rider, and which (like all close relationships) can career between love and occasionally almost hate, as frustrations, discomforts, fears and hunger are shared.

Here's the story of a woman who had a childhood dream of taking a pony on a long solo journey. Painfully shy, the author decided, rather than join a group with a knowledgeable leader, to come to Ireland, buy a beautiful, stout-hearted Connemara pony and slog that pony through bogs until the horse, wandering in the night, fell over a cliff to her death. One has to wonder why the author would persist in such a miserable, ruinous "adventure" much less write about it. A sorrowful tale of self-delusion and misadventure all leading to the unnecessary death of a worthy animal.

I enjoyed this travel story for most of the book. As a horse lover and rider I have often fantasized about treking with my horse. But I also found the authors ignorance and lack of basic horsemanship knowledge very alarming. I thought she was bold but foolish to take on an adventure like this alone. Given that she wrote the book years later I am surprised that she does not reflect on how naive she was. I think anyone familiar with horses will read this book waiting for someone or the horse to be injured.

About the Author

Nick Neddo has been teaching people primitive skills since 2000. His interests span from Stone Age skills and technology, to nature observation and art. Drawing, however, is his first and greatest interest. His skill set also includes wilderness survival, tracking and awareness, basketry, and hide tanning. He currently teaches at the Roots School in Vermont, where he runs classes and workshops for both adults and children on primitive arts, Stone-Age living skills, wilderness survival, and nature awareness. He is the author of The Organic Artist: Make Your Own Paint, Paper, Pigments, Prints and More from Nature as well as Wild Art Workshop for Kids: A Kids Guide to Making Supplies and Art from Nature. This book is a homesteader's dream come true. It is loaded with practical artistic projects that if practiced and done correctly can give one a very well-founded sense of accomplishment and joy. I haven't done any true home creative projects in quite a while and reading through this book really got my juices flowing to start on a project using materials that I already have (pet hair galore), or that I can find on my suburban property. These various projects are often linked together such as making glue out of hide pieces then having to add your iron/vinegar solution that you made as a previous project. I am looking forward to trying out some of the more simple projects with my kids this spring when we can work outside and not stink up the inside of our house cooking up what is required in a project to cook.One of my kids is really wanting to make home-made quills from large bird feathers. We won't be able to find any of large feathers around here so we will have to purchase them somewhere but the experience of knowing how to make the quills is what we are after. Then later, we can choose what type of ink we want to make - coffee, berry, soot, black walnut or some other? I've reached the age where I'm now very interested in what my ancestors did and how they did them, and I want to try to instill that interest in my kids, if possible. Honestly, I don't see our way of life being sustained forever and the day will probably come sooner than we think that all of this stuff we've had for years available all the time nearly everywhere we go just might not be around anymore, or nearly in as much a quantity and cheap price. It might behoove a person to learn to make things the way they used to be made. And besides, it's fun!!Love the projects in this book and I look forward to making a lot of them with my kids or without. I am especially interested in making paper, which we can write on using our home-made quills and ink!

I first heard about this book through an email link and being artist and jack of all trades I decided to pick it up on a pre-order. I have purchased books on making various things from nature in the past and some of them are either too simplistic, to boring, or are nothing but pictures. Of course some of the books are great and I have to say this falls into that category. It has enough information on the basics to grab your interest without being boring and it allows you to be creative with your variations. It also has enough pictures to get the information across correctly and show what you can do with the techniques, without being a coffee table book.I do have a couple of small things I can see as being problems for others. First, this book isn't really for city dwellers, urbanites, third story apartment renters, or those unacquainted with dirt. Not saying that people who live in cities won't gain anything from this book, but many of the processes are smelly, or require the ability to light fires without going to jail. Also since the book suggests, as do I, that the reader acquire materials from nature, in a humane and eco-minded manner, living in a city would make this difficult and ordering too many materials in sort of defeats the point. Second, I found some of the topics covered to be rudimentary, although I believe that is more from my preexisting knowledge on the subject rather than an issue wit the book. It is only for a couple of things, however, and even though I dabble in this sort of art (for example I make my own charcoal all the time) I still found a great number of useful things.If you are an artist or know an artist who has access to the outdoor wonders of nature, then I recommend this book for you, or for you to purchase for them. Also anyone who likes the book "Back to Basics" by Abigail R. Gehring will love this book as well. If you like to take hikes and long nature walks you will be amazed by all of the materials you can find in just a couple of minutes of looking. I can see this book getting ragged edges and a worn cover, not because of the quality of the bookbinding, but because I will look at it so often. BUY THIS BOOK.

This book is unlike any book on art that I have ever read or have in my art library. The pictures on the cover are what drew me to this book. I love to use charcoal, inks, watercolors, etc in my art. I also love to use earthy colors, and I especially love to have an organic feel to my art. So this book piqued my interest.It exceeded ALLand EVERY expectations. I'll never walk through the woods, go on a hike or look at my own backyard the same. Nick breaks down step by step different ways to create all my favorite mediums using materials Mother Nature provides.All that said, making the different supplies listed throughout his book are not quick to make, nor may all the materials be readily available. Though everything is broken down in easy to follow step by step with pictures, and photos of art Nick creates using his organic supplies. Even if you never want to make your own supplies, this book is a worthy addition to any artists library.

Inspiring! I love nothing more than walking in the wild, gathering plants and creating works of art from them. But up until now, most of those things we tools for survival. Bowls, bows, baskets and everything else you can think of that starts with the letter B. The Organic Artist however, allows the individual to step back in time to that moment when art was advanced one step further than function. With one foot in the past, the reader can take a step forward toward the future, where perhaps, like the author, they can create magnificent works of art that are made, start to finish, in harmony with the natural world. Neddo's own work serves as an inspiring example of what's possible and his explanations are clear and easy to follow. I'm most grateful for the teachings shared in this book.

Overall this book will teach me most of what I need to know. The only parts of it I absolutely will not be using are the parts like the 'hide glue' that require use of animal parts to make it. I was hoping the section on paper would also include how to make paper from recycled paper but it only covers making it from leaves.
