Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587) was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I "The Virgin Queen (1533-1603) of England,. Mary's mother was Mary of Guise a Frenchwoman who was wed to the Scottish monarch James V. Mary spent her youth in the sophisticated French Court of Henry II. She wed the Dauphin of France Francis. When he died at a young age she was sent to Scotland her birthplace becoming Queen in 1560. Scotland was a difficult land with warring nobles and battles galore going on between Roman Catholics (Mary's religion) and Protestants led by the fiery Presbyterian John Knox the great Reformer. England was ruled by Elizabeth the daughter of Henry VIII and his executed wife Anne Boleyn,. She followed Mary I the first British Queen on the throne. Mary was wed to Phillip of Spain and the daughter of Henry's first wife the Spaniard Catherine of Aragon. Mary was a tall woman with auburn hair standing almost six feet tall. Her 2 husbands were Lord Darnley of England who was murdered and Bothwell a rough nobleman. Elizabeth agreed to Mary's execution in England in 1587 so she would not be her successor to the British throne following her own death. The history is tangled and it may be hard for neophytes to Tudor era history to keep all the names and family alliances clear in their minds. The book is well written by a young British scholar and is well illustrated. Kate Williams has done original research spending hours reading through Mary's correspondence. She brings a feminine angle to the often told story. It was a brutal male dominated age in which two strong women Mary and Elizabeth were called upon to lead their lands. Great British history!

I’m a fan of the Tudor period and have found this book to be delightful so far. A good mix of the familiar and the new. Well researched and beautifully written!

This was a stunning presentation of Mary Queen of Scott's and Elizabeth. It was well researched, written and presented.....about a fascinating but tragic figure and true Queen ...Mary...and her rival. How could Elizabeth live with herself for 19 yrs with her caged cousin? How could Mary endure that long of a prison..however luxurious her external signs of court life but without real freedom? I would not blame her for her final attempt at true freedom. Bravo for a page turner!!!!

I found it interesting but I was unable to grasp exactly what thesis the author was advancing. What was the core concept that the author espoused? Is it merely that snap judgments are sometimes accurate, but nevertheless we must train ourselves not to react spontaneously based on those same first impressions? There really is no underlying thesis.

This is an incredible tour de force with detailed research and eye-opening, and often disheartening insights into our flawed personal decision making processes. If read rightly, I believe this will thrust you into a new way of thinking and cause you to strive to develop ways to overcome unintentional biases and even hope to improve when you "trust your gut." Read wrongly, it will either cause frustration and hopelessness or anger and resentment. Gladwell does not give a prescription here. He doesn't provide a blueprint or a roadmap. He educates and leaves it to us to see where in our day to day we might be mind blind or are relying too heavily on data rather than instinct (or vice versa). It is truly up to us to take this information and use it as a lens to examine our own thinking and search to improve how we take what we see and use it to make better choices.

This book touches on a brilliant idea: we make decisions rapidly, even if we can't always explain exactly HOW we make those decisions. Gladwell does an excellent job at providing evidence to back up his claims. Really... he provides a plethora of examples to support these claims. In my opinion, WAY too many examples.I'm a bottom-line kind of person and I don't read for fun; I read to gain applicable knowledge. Gladwell proved his concept in the first 30-50 pages and that was good enough for me. He then proceeded to continue proving the concept for another 200 pages. I hardly learned how to actually apply the concepts of rapid-cognition from this book and I'm annoyed at how much of my time was wasted. I wish he proved the concept in 30-50 pages and followed it up with actual ways to take advantage of that concept.This book verified something that I believed to be true (rapid-cognition) without providing ways to practically exploit the theory. I'm not buying anything else of Gladwell's, but I would recommend looking up the sparknotes/summary of this book.

A terrible collection of cherry picked anecdotes and conflicting data, all carefully laid out to appeal to the instant gratification of the human ego.Gladwell had made a chunk of change telling us we can "blink" and know the truest of truths... that our guts are inherently correct (well, except the many times he points out how incorrect they are, due to racism (except when he back pedals and says maybe the people in that example aren't racist, actually), sexism (except when he says it's possible sexism was not, in fact, a factor in such and such examples), and other biases (which the book both promises to teach us to control and says we have *no ability* to control), and that by "thin-slicing" (making use of the "adaptive unconscious" of our mind, which, incidentally, he says repeatedly can never be unlocked) we can be better people, fight wars "better", and solve the problems of the world.It's a book for the casual reader, so the stories he uses to back up his arguments are often terribly irresponsible anecdotes. The studies he references are rarely detailed sufficiently so that the reader could know whether they'd had any controls, had been repeated and peer reviewed, etc. They're riddled with opinion and assumptions about results, and we're left to assume the lens from which he makes these statements is pure and holy.The best take away from this self help quickie is that some people will, as a result of spending a dozen or so hours reading it and thinking about their minds and how they work, will be, going forward, more introspective, which is not a bad thing. The worst take away is that some (and I fear most) people will glean only the basest concept from his promises: that their guts are always right, leaving them less introspective and more irrationally bold and self-satisfied.

This is a read for an Ethics and the Media class. Mind-blowing! Truly a fantastic read and I feel like I learned a lot about how different types of thinking give us better results in different scenarios. The stories within are fascinating and the entire class raved about our favoritess and how incredible the processes worked. Really makes you look at the world differently, and it a good way. A classmate had read another Gladwell title - I am excited to find that this author has more to read - I will definitely be checking out his other titles! I have loaned my copy to several friends who have all been just as impressed. Fantastic read for sure!

I guess what immediately caused me to doubt the author's thesis (the first two seconds) is his introductory story of the Getty Kouros. He assumes Zeri, Harrison, Hoving, and Dontas were correct in their "intuitive" conclusion. But the fact is, the piece is still on display at the Getty and there are good people on both sides. The Getty concludes it is one or the other, ancient or a modern forgery. No one really knows. So the two second intuition in his first example has not been proven to be accurate. I guess he should have used a better illustration to make his point. Nevertheless, he told the story well and I am compelled to read the rest of the book because of it, which is why I have rated it a 3.

This book was recommended to me because I told someone I trust my instincts and I was actually disappointed in it because it was kind of more geared towards the negative when actually I think it is more helpful in this day and age to trust your instinct in the more positive way. Professor Sasu Tarkoma, Professor, Helsinki University of Technology and Principal Member of Research Staff, Nokia Research Center, FinlandSasu Tarkoma received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki, Department of Computer Science. He is currently professor at Helsinki University of Technology, Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He is also Principal Member of Research Staff at the Nokia Research Center. He is Docent at the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki. He has managed and participated in national and international research projects at the University of Helsinki, Helsinki University of Technology (TKK), and Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). He has over 100 publications including 56 refereed scientific articles, and has also contributed to several books on mobile middleware. Dr Jaakko Kangasharju, Helsinki University of Technology, FinlandJaakko Kangasharju received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Helsinki in 2008. He is currently working as a senior researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Helsinki University of Technology, managing projects on middleware in sensor networks and mobile computing. Great book for kids and their mom!

Interesting and very easy to read for kids

Thorough, well organized, and cute travel guide. It's written for traveling there, but it also works as a study guide if you don't have any travel plans. There are lots of fun little games and facts to fill out, so I'd recommend buying the actual booklet. But, if you buy the Kindle version, there is a benefit to being able to reuse the resource for school or homeschooling. In that case, a notebook could be used for the activities.My kids found this really fun to go through and we learned a lot about Thailand!

My sons 2nd grade class is studying Asia this year, so this was a great book for him. We’ve been on ‘trips’ to Thailand each afternoon and we’ve both learned more than I imagined. He still has more pages to complete, but took his book to show his teacher and she too was impressed!

We’ve just come back from a great couple of weeks in Thailand. A relative bought this for my daughter as part of her Christmas gift, and I must say, it was one of the best things she got! It gave her loads of fun when in Thailand and is also a wonderful diary of her trip that she’ll be able to look back on when she’s older and bring back fabulous memories. I can’t wait for our next holiday and I will be buying another guide myself when the time comes.

I'm somewhat of a self-help book addict. I was browsing Pinterest one day and stumbled upon the "konmari method" and was intrigued, so I bought this book for kindle and read it in about an hour. I always thought I was a very organized person (because everything I owned had a designated, labelled place and my house was always super clean), but after reading this book I realized I was nothing more than a skilled hoarder. I locked myself in my house for 6 straight weeks (seriously, only came out for absolute necessary obligations and appointments) and decluttered the ever-living hell out of my house. The only thing that slowed me down was waiting for every Tuesday to roll around when the big donation truck would come and haul off all my unwanted items, or waiting for every Monday for the trash collection. I probably discarded well over 100 bags of clutter in that 6 weeks and earned over $400 selling the big-ticket items via social media, which I used to make my house prettier. I also donated an entire trunk full of books, CDs, and DVDs to my local library. My home's available storage used to be completely maxed out, and now I have empty drawers everywhere! I also have no less than 40 completely empty plastic storage bins in my garage that were previously full of clutter (and the storage bins are the next thing that will be sold!). Reading this book was life-changing. While I didn't follow it to the T (I do not thank my socks for their service every day LOL), it is the best feeling in the world to look around a room and realize you love every single item in said room. I no longer feel weighed down by "stuff". I still have a few odds and ends to finish up in my house, but I'm about 90% done at this point and loving it. I never knew getting rid of things could be so addicting. I also never thought I was the kind of person who could ever throw away a photo, but by the time I got to the sentimental items category, I discarded an entire garbage can full of photos without hesitation and it felt great!

Here's what the book says: touch every item in your home and if you "love it" then keep it. If you don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling of love, throw it away. There. Now you don't have to read it. Seriously, de-cluttering and organizing can have a huge positive impact on life. But the way this book approaches the topic is so silly and juvenile that I don't understand why it's a best seller. People: use your common sense and toss the things you don't use that are cluttering up your life. Ok?

First, this book has done for me what I wanted it to do: it’s helping me get rid of junk, albeit not quite in the way the author wants me to do it, but progress is progress, right?I will say the book is somewhat repetitive and it makes the same point over and over (you have too much clutter and you’re keeping it for the wrong reasons); this might be a cold, hard, necessary teaching method to break the habit of keeping clutter, so I won’t dwell on that. On the other hand though, in areas where I wanted more detail, such as the steps she provides to actually do “decluttering”, or “tidying” as the author calls it, I found I wanted more detail. While clothing (for example) is well covered, entire categories of typical American “stuff” are left out, such as cupboards, kitchen tools, towels/linens, sporting goods, major electronic and computer gear, and the garage (and the myriad of categories of stuff found in there). There is absolutely no mention of a garage. The book, to me, is aimed heavily towards a female audience, and I’m not saying that in a sexist way. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s just a missed opportunity to be more inclusive; men have stuff too, and the vast majority (not scientifically measured, just my impression) of the examples in the book are aimed at the types of belongings women *typically* own, again please don’t take this the wrong way. Most of the client examples the author mentions are women, with perhaps only two male clients I can remember. This is only notable to the extent that many pages are spent discussing organizing purses and none spent on organizing screwdrivers. I own zero purses but lots and lots of screwdrivers (along with other tools), and they badly need organizing. But I think I’ll be able to apply the technique to my garage as well as my closet. So for any of you out there who also own screwdrivers and they are in need of organization, perhaps you’ll be in the same boat as me, wondering why your tool collection was never even mentioned.I would like the author to focus more on suggesting *donating* the items she so desperately wants us to discard. She gives good reasons for not giving your old stuff to your family, but surely there’s a better home for unwanted clothing than the trash. I’ve made it a point to donate mine. Perhaps this type of thinking will make it into the second edition.Finally, as the author is from Japan, some of the cited mystical benefits of “tidying up” may register as goofy to Americans. Thanking your belongings for a job well done, as she suggests, is a form of consideration which may not resonate. But this is a matter of personal preference and posture; it certainly can’t hurt but I feel all but the most committed American readers may find it a bit campy.In any case, I did get rid of a lot of stuff on my first round, and indeed it felt good to do so. I’ve got a long way to go, but at least the author has given me a rational framework for examining an item and deciding “should it stay or should it go”. More is going than ever before.
