Review

“Williams expertly and entertainingly details the twisty and sordid path to the monarch’s execution. In framing Mary’s story as being one about ‘how we really think of women and their right to rule,’ Williams hints at its ongoing resonance.” - Christian Science Monitor“A sharp new history of two adversarial monarchs. Though parts of the story may be well-known to readers of royal history, Williams injects enough fresh viewpoints to make it a satisfying whole.” - Publishers Weekly“A refreshing, engaging biography. Tudor-Stuart enthusiasts will appreciate the greatly vibrant tone in this account.” - Booklist“This very readable and fast-paced biography relates the story of Mary Stuart in a fresh and engaging way. Highly recommended.” - Historical Novels Review“Kate Williams has succeeded brilliantly in bringing us a fresh Mary―one who she has set in a gloriously rich context, while making her tragic heroine irresistibly real and relevant. But the true triumph of this book lies in the perfect balancing of Williams’s excellent research with the need to keep the pages turning. Its pace is perfect, and there isn’t a line wasted in this taut, dramatic, and utterly beguiling biography.” - Charles Spencer, author of 'To Catch a King'“There is much to cover in this elegant synthesis of royal biography and political thriller, and Williams is adroit in her handling of it. A scintillating, provocative analysis of Mary and Elizabeth’s reigns and their relationship.” - The Telegraph (UK)“Looks past tired stereotypes to give fresh insights into Mary’s tumultuous life and death.” - The Daily Record (UK)“What makes [the book] special is Williams’s understanding of how gender shaped Mary’s life.” - The Times (Ireland)

Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1587) was a cousin of Queen Elizabeth I "The Virgin Queen (1533-1603) of England,. Mary's mother was Mary of Guise a Frenchwoman who was wed to the Scottish monarch James V. Mary spent her youth in the sophisticated French Court of Henry II. She wed the Dauphin of France Francis. When he died at a young age she was sent to Scotland her birthplace becoming Queen in 1560. Scotland was a difficult land with warring nobles and battles galore going on between Roman Catholics (Mary's religion) and Protestants led by the fiery Presbyterian John Knox the great Reformer. England was ruled by Elizabeth the daughter of Henry VIII and his executed wife Anne Boleyn,. She followed Mary I the first British Queen on the throne. Mary was wed to Phillip of Spain and the daughter of Henry's first wife the Spaniard Catherine of Aragon. Mary was a tall woman with auburn hair standing almost six feet tall. Her 2 husbands were Lord Darnley of England who was murdered and Bothwell a rough nobleman. Elizabeth agreed to Mary's execution in England in 1587 so she would not be her successor to the British throne following her own death. The history is tangled and it may be hard for neophytes to Tudor era history to keep all the names and family alliances clear in their minds. The book is well written by a young British scholar and is well illustrated. Kate Williams has done original research spending hours reading through Mary's correspondence. She brings a feminine angle to the often told story. It was a brutal male dominated age in which two strong women Mary and Elizabeth were called upon to lead their lands. Great British history!

I’m a fan of the Tudor period and have found this book to be delightful so far. A good mix of the familiar and the new. Well researched and beautifully written!

This was a stunning presentation of Mary Queen of Scott's and Elizabeth. It was well researched, written and presented.....about a fascinating but tragic figure and true Queen ...Mary...and her rival. How could Elizabeth live with herself for 19 yrs with her caged cousin? How could Mary endure that long of a prison..however luxurious her external signs of court life but without real freedom? I would not blame her for her final attempt at true freedom. Bravo for a page turner!!!!

Gift for daughter! This was pre-order and I'm sure she will love it!

Have a historical library. Great addition

Gives a different perspective to Mary - difficult to read as so detailed with names of individuals

Decent book. Like that it’s hardback. Very detailed book.

Good read...
