About the Author

A K Nicholas is an art photographer from the United States who specializes in figurative imagery. A diverse background and traditional art education prompted him to develop a unorthodox aesthetic that blends sensual imagery with a painterly style of manipulated colors. He was introduced to art through museum visits and other cultural experiences in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. Growing up the Middle East, he saw how women's bodies were hidden from public view, In stark contrast Europeans mostly lacked prudishness. Compare those to the US, where we have a bifurcated culture: half of us celebrate our beauty while the other half shuns it. He did not become interested in art until high school. Taking a surrealism art history class, he realized he could explore art that interested him and began learning painting. His initial training with the nude was figure drawing while studying art in college. His first nude shoot was a complete surprise to him when a classmate in college assumed that his invitation to model meant for her to be nude. Although trained in drawing and painting, photography became his concentration by the conclusion of his art degree. Following art school, he put in his dues clerking and staffing the darkroom of a camera store. In the decades following his first shoot, he has photographed hundreds of nude models for pictorial books, limited edition prints, and his instructional books. In recent years he has dedicated himself full time to being an artist. He collaborates with models to create alternate realities, on what he calls "a journey with no known destination." With his passion for sharing knowledge, he writes to help you learn from his experience, including how to avoid some common mistakes and to encourage your creativity.

I read this book quickly, and greedily, and yet, now that I am finished with it I find that I understood perhaps very little of it and will have to go back and read it again. This is not to say I didn't enjoy the book. I loved it. The writing is superb: elegant, graceful, understated and deeply connected. And there is so much sly humor that I found myself laughing out loud, particularly in the second half, in what could be described as the "dark" half. And yet, because the two separate story lines that form the book are indeed "asymmetrical" it's challenging to assign meaning to this narrative without a closer look. To me, that is the mark of a truly good book, one that has you immediately turning to page one as soon as you've finish the last word, eager to re-enter the world of the novel with a different perspective. Like life, Halliday has created an experience that is multi layered, mysterious, and complicated. And like life, I need to ponder it,and explore it, to fully understand its meaning. I highly recommend this book, if nothing else, for the brain tease it will provide you.

Encouraged by its being one of NYT 100 notable books and several of the blurbs I waded into this, intrigued by the characters in the first twenty pages or so, I kept going with increasing boredom and frustration with the tedious dialogue and lack of character development. It is rare that I don't finish a book. I couldn't justify continuing with this one.

This book, which is essentially a study of the imbalance of power in relationships, was brilliant…but boring. Philosophical…but perplexing. Intriguing…but incongruous.Written by Lisa Halliday, it is actually three novellas, the first two of which have nothing in common and the third of which is a somewhat lame attempt to unite the first two.The first story, "Folly," is a May-December romance between Alice and Ezra that some critics say is a roman a clef about Halliday's own affair with Philip Roth with lots of allusions to "Alice in Wonderland." The second story, "Madness," is about Amar, a young American man of Iraqi heritage, who is detained for several days at Heathrow Airport based (presumably) on ethnic profiling. The story flashes back and forth between the airport nightmare and his life story until then. The third story is a radio interview with Ezra, and in the answer to one of the many questions he is asked, he unites the first two stories. Sort of."Asymmetry" is high-brow literary fiction at its snobbiest and most pretentious, and I was totally underwhelmed.

A thinking book. Beautiful prose hooks the reader in the first chapter then ends abruptly with a seemingly unrelated story about a detention in Heathrow airport. Still well-written- it's hard to get invested in characters that appear strung together. The last chapter lost both me and the additional stars. I grew to hate the pompous writer. It wasn't until a discussion group that I got the full intention of the author. The only way I can describe this book is passive-aggressive. I would have enjoyed the full story of the December-May, Eliza Doolittle romance rather than the suggestion through three unrelated short-stories. This is the time when the idea of show- don't tell may get lost in translation. Either way- it was thoughtfully and precisely written.

The first section is a brilliant expose of an asymmetrical relationship. Halliday captured a famous aging author and her time with him in a riveting and well written piece. The second section Madness was her own work to make her mentor's point ... write what you know in great detail. She did a great job of failing to follow his advice, but it was too tedious for the reader to endure. Two dimensional characters in a story which she had no connection with, a never - ending boring tale. The third section, the interview was a throw-away and insulting. The first and third parts of the book also seemed to be a listing of famous works of authors and composers for no particular integral reason. It did not serve to connect us to Ezra. If you have to work this hard to analyze a novel to get through its layers it will disappoint. It did.

I find it hard to understand what all the hype is about. There are clues throughout the book that the reader can pick up to sort-of string the narratives together, but overall the book is a stylishly written mess.

I enjoyed the first and third parts, but found the second part to be lacking (the airport scenes were great, but the Iraq locations lost me). Somehow I understood the connection between the parts without having read any interviews or reviews first, but that wasn't common among my friends and I highly recommend some research in advance of reading it (others were confused and lost interest and missed context, all of which can be avoided by reading about the connection ahead of time). The book is very much written by and for a high brow literary crowd rather than the mass consumer (I actually found it was trying too hard with the references and clever tricks).

I read this book almost nonstop, pausing only to sleep and take care of work obligations. Otherwise, i read it while eating meals, while waiting for the next conference seminar to begin, every spare moment. It's possible that a sliver of that could be attributed to a bewildered reel at the death of Philip Roth (who was oblique inspiration for a character in here). But i think the majority of it was the twisty, complex, convoluted Rube Goldberg machine of its structure and interwoven themes.

I got this book to read and also purchased the audible version and have discovered it is the missing piece of my own education. I played the audible version several times as it goes rapid pace but was convenient. It is sad to discover that many of Carter Goodwin Woodson's fears have been and continue to be realised in the racial disparity widely noted against the black skin worldwide. Although Mr. Woodson concentrated his criticism on the American social structure of his time, one of his truisms (shortened for this review) plays out daily in today's social responses: “If you can control a man’s thinking, you don’t have to worry about his actions ... and if you can make a man believe that he is justly an outcast, you don’t have to order him to the back door, he will go to the back door on his own and if there is no back door, the very nature of the man will demand that you build one.” Carter G. Woodson was not fully appreciated for his contributions whether some of those were impractical or not and that is not surprising; most brilliant minds are revered posthumously (and perhaps never fully understood). As the son of a slave one must admire Mr. Woodson's capacity to rise above his circumstances as well as his ability to see the issues that plague black people with laser-like accuracy. When reading this book, the reader can only but shake their head in silent acknowledgment of the truths stated therein. Another book that won't find its way into the general / 'public' library of American literature but which should be read by anybody trying to unravel the reasons black progress appears at times to be constantly stymied.

This is not the original publication of this book! It also does not state state which version or publication it is so buyer beware. When compared to the original publication in 1933 its is not in any way similar. I would not recommend it. I would instead recommend going to your local bookstore for a real copy of Woodson work, this is a fabrication.

it's formatted like an e-book but one of my questions is is it like the first edition? That part I'm not sure of as it doesn't specify in the book or the ad. It's not a big paperback like I expected it to be but maybe that's because I expected it and it wasn't a big book to begin with. EDIT: I got a hold of the publishers of this book and this book is not abridged also IT IS TAKEN FROM THE FIRST EDITION/PUBLISHING WITH NO EDITS OR OMISSIONS .

This book could have been written as an indictment of some contemporary school districts. Carter G. Woodson had a crystal clear understanding as to how the educational system of his time period was failing to properly educate young black children. This was written during the early part of the twentieth century, barely two generations after the abolition of slavery. Everything was an uphill struggle, but most blacks knew that without a decent education, there was no way black people could advance as a group. He points out in his book the many systemic factors that lent itself to the intentional miseducation of the children of color in the public school system. A fascinating work, and still timely, considering the problems that the public school system is still having nationwide, especially in the urban areas.

Where was this book when I was going to school from 1950-62? I could not put it down once I began to read it, because it reminded me of so much of what I needed in my growth and developement was not made available to me as a young person of color growing up in a segregated society, and many of those who think that we have arrived at a color-blind point in America need to read this book, and then compare it to what is happening with us today. The author was relevent then in his revelations and in his effort to open eyes and minds to the lack of knowledge of self, and is more relevent now, because, too many educated people of color find it even harder to succeed in today's job market and the available employment opportunities. We still allow others to control almost every aspect of our lives, including what we are to learn, think, and accept from the world in which we live and the institutions which influences the minds of our children. Morover, we continue to consume more of what others produce for us than what we produce for ourselves. It is time we become producers and traders of goods and services in this nation and in our communities, and we should insist that our children be taught skills that will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. A college education means nothing if you cannot do more than just make a living, and if what you have studied is not marketable for more than teaching the same to someone else. Help someone to learn to produce something or provide a service that is needed by others in a world that is forever changing.

I gave this book four stars. The reason I gave this book a good rating, because the problems I read in this book about the mis education of the negro, still exists today. For example, black people still don't show one another respect especially if he or she has prosper in life. Black people still cannot take order from another black person for some reason but when you put a white person in charge, blacks will listen without no problems. Also black people do not have confidence in themselves and want to depend on the government ,which still make you a slave because you put in the hard work, you can accomplish anything in life. I'm a black man and I see this everyday and I'm sick of it. We don't shop we each other because we don't trust each other and blacks love to keep other blacks down instead of helping. I hope one day we can all come together but for right now, I know I sound pessimistic but it's not happening. Black people in the early centruy will be ashamed to see how the black people act today.

Cringely will make you laugh again and again and again in this series of character studies, history and folly of what's come to be known as Silicon Valley. He paints not-too-flattering images of some big names in the game but doesn't force you to accept his views; while he is never tongue-in-cheek, he still manages a playful way to make his points. The book made me chuckle often and burst out loud in laughter frequently. It's a great revelation of the industry and a classic for what it is. Anyone who has mastered QWERTY should grab a copy, it's a fun read, one that an old veteran of the 1980's personal computer "wars" can fully appreciate - been there, done that!

Robert X. Cringely, a former Apple employee turned tech gossip columnist, provides us an interesting book about Computers and Computer Manufactuing in Accidental Empires. It provides the reader a lot of information about the arguably the biggest industy in the world from its humble beginnings until the time (1996) it was written which happens to be the peak of its explosion during the 90's when the internet provided a major impact to everyone lives. It presents us the important people behind it such as the late Steve Jobs,Bill Gates and many others. Also included are the new major companies in Silicon Valley. Although this was written twenty years ago, it still remains a great book and it will give us a better appreciation of the things that happened back then and the years to come. People in the IT industry will surely appreciate it.

Robert Cringley has no reason to be nice to anyone since (1) he writes a column on the dirt of the industry and (2) his name is a pseudonym.So, the gloves are off, and no holds are barred.Of course, there are a few of Cringely's laws, and some of those tired bits of vision (broadband. It's the next big thing, as of 1996. Spitting distance to 2001 and I'm still waiting!).The addendum to the 1996 edition is interesting, since it's less predictive than the 1992 edition. Sometime between 1996 and the present, things changed in ways that no one expected, and the predictions are rather amusing. In 1992, looking at the 'new' 486s and looking at the future, the vision is true.If you want to see someone analyze everyone's personality defects, in depth, this is the book for you. If not, there's plenty else to read.I'd recommend this work.

I had so much fun reading this book that I got sad when I finished it. It only takes you up to 1996, I am eagerly awaiting a follow up that takes you into this century and talks about the rebirth of Apple and OSX, and the MEOS and Vista debacles, XP, the rise of google, the open source movement and the Linux giant waiting in the wings. Netbooks, the iphone, kindle type book readers, the rise and fall of AMD and the intel wars, CUDA, Napster, multi-core processing and Moore's law.Solid state drives, thumb drives, Ubuntu, etc...Come on Cringely! I'm waiting, I have my money put aside for the follow up :)

Great book for anybody who is a techie. If you aren't, you will probably still enjoy the book but some of its humor may be lost on you. It doesn't get very technical, though, so anybody can pick it up and read through it without any trouble. It has an interesting sense of style in the writing that is both very personal as well as being informative. Very enjoyable light read.
