About the Author

Thomas West founded Intermark Language Services in 1995 after practicing law for five years with a large Atlanta law firm. Intermark recently celebrated its 17th year in business and is widely recognized as the go-to firm for legal and financial translations. West received his B.A. degree in French and English from the University of Mississippi summa cum laude and his M.A. in German from Vanderbilt University, where he was a Harold Stirling Vanderbilt fellow. He earned his J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law and was admitted to the Georgia bar in 1990. I own a language company and work as a full-time professional linguist and have translated legal texts from Spanish to English for many years. The need for a dependable, up-to-date resource for the huge variations in legal terminology extant in Latin America and Spain is very pressing for both the accuracy of translations such as what I do and for members of the legal profession who must deal with the legal systems of the nineteen Spanish-speaking countries of the world.The breadth and inclusiveness of this dictionary is extraordinary. It is totally current, having been just released in the summer of 2012, taking into account the many changes to legal codes all over the Spanish-speaking world since the year 2000.Three things differentiate this book from other dictionaries I have encountered. First is its rich content. The terms are presented in their most common usages but goes a step beyond to include many far less common phrases. It becomes clear how the nuances change from one phrase to the other and how important it is to see these words in actual use rather than simply listing them in the typical dictionary setting.Second is its wonderful specification of which countries use which terms. Argentina's legal terms may be quite different from Ecuador's or Mexico's, and the words themselves may have very different meanings. Accidentally applying the meaning from one country to the text from another can spell trouble if one is not careful.And third, the author takes the time to explain in plain English what some of these terms and phrases mean, especially where the Spanish legal system differs from the one in the U.S. or Britain, and the translator or legal professional must be acutely aware of these differences.If I had one criticism to make, it is that it is unavailable in electronic form, at least at this time. Having an online or computerized format to access at any time and in any place would be a huge boon. But until then, I will take the book gladly.I can honestly say that this is one of the best reference investments I have ever made. Anyone who deals with Spanish language legal terms should absolutely own a copy of this exceptional resource. It is a gem of a book.

This would be amazing if it were a two way dictionary like I thought it would be, but it is not. It is only from English into Spanish. You would need to already know the word in Spanish in order to find it. I ended up sending it back because the likelihood of me ever using it, is very slim. However, I can see how it would be an excellent book for translators to have.

I have been using this dictionary for over a year now and find it extremely useful. I can even guess when I'm looking for a translation of an English term, because alas, the dictionary is still only one-way Spanish to English. The examples are extremely useful in sorting out the term that is needed. I have bought the dictionary to help fledgling translators. In fact, we would probably like the English to Spanish version to be in another book. The size of this book is very handy and it has held up under constant use. For further comment, see our colleague Moskowitz.s review. He is an expert on comparative Latin American Spanish, whose work has been very helpful.

And, good news! It costs only $50 from Amazon.

I just wish I had received a few days earlier :) [no fault of Amazon's, this was the forwarder who was closed for summer holidays] as I was doing a legal translation and it would have come in so handy! It seems to be just what I was looking for! A nice feature, is that it has entries for terms used in different countries of the Americas. I have not had the opportunity to actually put it to use yet, but just by looking through it, it promises to be a great help in my profession as a legal translator, saving me from time-consuming web searches. My recommendation is that if you are thinking to buy it, go ahead, it's money well spent.

Great book to have for translators unfortunately they should have it in e-book version so that you can download it to your iPod or tablet. Anyone out there has an e-book similar dictionary?

The Lucky Few is drenched in love and grace and massive amounts of relatable spiritual encouragement. This book is about Down syndrome, infertility, adoption, the birth of a family, and having "a front seat to the goodness of God" in the midst of trying times. Wow! 😍 Each word was exquisitely chosen and I frequently found myself quite moved, wiping away buckets of tears that somehow just kept appearing. Flooded with memories of Addison's heart surgeries and issues with pulmonary hypertension, I nodded along with every beautiful word and appreciated learning from her perspective on it all.

I read this book in one sitting (very rare for me). It felt like Heather was sitting across from me and just sharing her heart. Her writing style is easy to follow and the pace of the book was just perfect. I sobbed through parts of it because her story is similar to mine. She is real and raw. Her story reminded me that God has got this (whatever your THIS is)! I am thankful she chose to share her heart on paper.

The Lucky Few is a beautifully written story of the Avis' journey with God to grow their family. Heather is an eloquent author. You will follow find yourself laughing and crying. You will be encouraged and challenged. This book is for everyone. It doesn't matter where you are in life. If you are encouraged by others stories than getthis book. You won't be disappointed.

At a time when our culture does not have any regard for life especially the poor helpless unborn this book comes at no better time. It focuses on the value of every little being, in spite of their defects. They are still God's creation with a soul and it is through the kindness of people like the Avises that inspires us and opens our hearts and lives to these beautiful children in any state of "being special" and race. It sends a clear and true message that we all have a purpose in this life and we are given opportunities everyday, in strange ways only God is capable of, to do good. We just have to be sensitive and pay attention. Thank you for this book, Heather, and sharing your extraordinary life with these beautiful children. God bless you and your husband. Continue to be the best parents...you are so lucky, indeed.

I read this book in one night. I loved it. It is an easy, enjoyable (and convicting) read. As an adoptive parent, I can say that there are a lot of scary aspects of adoption, even with children who do not have significant special needs. Heather Avis' story highlights how God enables and supplies unqualified humans to do hard and amazing things, and the beauty that enters in when we give him our "yes." Thank you, Heather, for reminding me to let go of my preconceived notions of what my family/child/life should look like and saying "yes" to ALL that God has called me to, and will equip me for: the scary, hard, and unknown; the unconventional and unconditional.

The writing style was the sharing of a friend, their story had me bringing up my phone to read another paragraph or two every chance I could. The insights shared caused me to stop and ponder i.e. Heather's father's "God told me this isn’t about coming to terms with what’s happening, but rather coming to grips with it" and his explaining the difference. (I have a page of quotes from the book for later reflection). Heather so honestly lays before us their interconnected families' actions, words and emotions. Beautiful story, beautifully written. God is awesome!

A friend recommended this book to me, and I am glad that she did. I do not have a child with Down's Syndrome, not have I adopted a child. Although I have given birth to a child, I also have experienced, and/or witnessed, infertility struggles, adoption procedures, and the blessings that they eventually bring. As I get older, I am in constant search for testimonies and experiences that will make me a more empathetic family member, friend, and educator. Heather Avis' raw honesty in her words allowed me to feel her emotions. I felt her pain, disappointment, anxiety, joy, contentment, and gratitude. She also reminded me that God's plan for our lives is always better than our own.

What an incredible book! I started and finished this beautiful story in about 5 hours, I honestly just couldn't put it down.I'm so glad that Heather decided to give us a glimpse into her and her family's beautiful lives. Heather is honest, vulnerable, and real; seeing her growth from the start of her infertility to bringing home each of her and Josh's children was beautiful. I adored every page of this book and I'll be sharing it with many people in my life for sure! :)

I have read 4 books on home networking and this is a great book. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone setting up a home network. It's got it all and written in a style that's educational, practical, and not all theory. You will be able to set up your home LAN in no time with this book. I also recommned the "Home Networking Survival Guide" by David Strom as a companion (not a substitute) to this book. Wolf has written a great book here among all that I have read on the subject.

I bought this book because my roommate and I wanted to share an cable modem connection. I've tinkered with computers for quite some time, but was a little intimidated about networking. This book had very detailed info on how to set up a home network in Windows (I connected an XP and 98 machine), including IP address configuration, file and printer sharing info, as well as understanding how NAT and DHCP works.For anyone who wants good step by step on setting up a home network, this is a solid book. Also had info on how to insert NIC cards, cabling etc. Overall, very good book, five stars.

If you have to pay someone to change your printer's ink cartridge, then this book is for you. Seriously. For someone like my dad for whom a computer is a nasty genie barely restrained by the lamp, then this book is perfect.If you have any systems experience AT ALL, then you'll want something more advanced. This book is too long on banter and too short on technical information for my needs, which aren't great; I'm not buying this book because I want to earn an MCSE.Still, I'll give Mr. Wolf four stars for writing something my dad could comprehend!

The best book I have seen for home networking. I've looked through a few (mainly borrowed from friends), and none had really gone far enough on broadband, Internet sharing and wireless networking (Wi-Fi and Home RF). This book has a chapter for each, and also goes in depth on Windows XP networking (as well as some of the older OS's). Also chapters on internet security, digital audio sharing, and other stuff. Don't waste your time with the other books on home networking.

This book covers every Windows version from 95 to XP except NT and Windows 2000. It's of little use to me.

I found the book both fascinating and inspiring. I most like that the compiler, Dr. Neil Douglas-Klotz, grouped the pieces by topic and introduced each section with a way to approach the material that is useful to our own spiritual development. I own four books by Khalil Gibran, but in this one I touch base with 13 of his books and can follow which selections came from which books. Plus in the introduction I learned a great deal about this amazing person that I never had known before. Now that I have finally read each selection once, I use the book daily by opening randomly, and applying the wisdom of that piece to my meditations. I can hardly wait until the next book, The Little Book of Love, to continue my journey with Khalil. I have ordered many copies to give away to family and friends.

Love this book. I don't always have time to read at length in the morning, this book is perfect - the passages are short and very profound. Great purchase!

Following a general introductory part, the guidebook gives a description of each section of the AT in MA and CT (a trail section is roughly a 10 mile or so segment, generally cut by notable roads). The description consists of two portions: general and historic information (nearby towns, sites, camping, etc.) and trail description. The latter is a list of mileage points and directions. While it is very dry, it provides precisely the information one needs for hiking the AT. The water-resistant (plastic-like) maps are very detailed. A rather unusual feature is charts showing elevation change versus distance traveled.In principle, either the maps or the book are sufficient to follow the trail, though each conveys useful additional information. Some people might perhaps find the two way too detailed and narrowly focused. In contrast to more comprehensive guidebooks (such as the White Mountain Guide), it describes little more than the AT (a few side trails are described), but in my view it does a fantastic job at what it sets out to. I have used this guidebook in MA and generally found it to be very accurate, even though it is 8 years old.

This is simple. The book is so so. There are definitely better guides that give you info on backpacking in CT and Mass. The only reason you should buy this product is for the maps. The maps are AWESOME! The detail is excelent and the map paper is water resistant. The book is lackluster and dull. The David Emblidge guide is much better and explains the trail with far more detail. Again, I don't plan on using this book but will absolutely use the maps. I give the maps five stars and the book 2-3 stars.

This book tells you what you need to know to hike the trail over these sections. The maps are accurate. It even includes sections on flora, fauna and geology of the region and hinking saftey.

Ok I am beginning to not trust Amazon reviews... How do 74% of people rate this 5 stars?!?! This book is beyond boring and basically repeats the pareto principle over and over and over again.... How many different ways can you say it? Well that's what this book does.Seriously, this could have been a short magazine article. The author provides very few examples outside of the obvious ones as to how to he applied this principle in his own life. Not to mention, some of his examples are extreme suggesting that you can ignore 100% of your emails and inferring they are a complete waste of time. The 80/20 rule really helps you take control of your life; make wise decisions in a short time; and advance towards your life goals. Highly recommended. Applying what Damon shares will indeed change your life for the better.

Although the title is not catchy, it truly represents the content presented. How do I regularly find myself in the weeds of details and never achieve anything or feeling satisfied? I have yet to live the 80/20 way. I have been following the 80/20 way for over a month now and I can honestly say that it has simplified my life and I actually get more done! The book is a very quick read, like most text from this author. Give it a try!

Although promoted as a "companion" to the popular TV series, this good and enjoyable guide to beginning genealogy really has little to do with the show, except for a color section in the middle covering each of the participants. Instead it's a nuts-and-bolts guide to 1) getting started on your family-history quest, and 2) the most commonly-used (and some not-so-common) records.Smolenyak writes enthusiastically and well. She is passionate about her subject and it shows.In some ways, the book suffers for the same reasons that the TV show suffers: it makes it look too easy. This is probably unavoidable in a beginning guide or a popular TV show since covering all the caveats might turn off the audience. That said, I wish there had been at least some emphasis on how one might go about developing skills, such as taking classes (which are often free or inexpensive), attending conferences, etc. Also lacking is any meaningful discussion of evaluation of and analysis of all of the various pieces of evidence one finds; obviously this can't be done thoroughly in a book like this, but it should at least be addressed.The author works for [...], the giant online genealogical service; although it is noted on the jacket blurb, in the interest of full disclosure she could have been a little more forthcoming about that relationship throughout the book when one of ancestry's features or databases takes center stage. Her recommendation of [...]'s member tree feature (as her first suggestion for software to use for your data) is ludicrous; I would be very surprised if that is her own database software of choice. (Save the comments: I'm a whole-world subscriber to ancestry.com and think it's a fabulous and essential resource.)What I especially like about this book, in addition to the writing, is its begin-at-the-beginning approach (start with yourself and work back); this may seem obvious, but it's not obvious to many beginners. There is a good section on home sources, talking to relatives, etc. The record examples and illustrations are great: generally from the famous or infamous (Chef Boyardee and Al Capone, to name a couple). Smolenyak's chapter about her search for President Obama's Irish ancestors is one of the best parts of the book because it illustrates difficult aspects to resolving a genealogical problem and, in this case, doesn't make it look easy.I recommend this book for anyone who wants to begin researching their family and to more experienced researchers who will probably find, as I did, some new (particularly online) resources.

I recently started working on my family genealogy. This book was a good introduction to how to research it, and now that I've gotten past most of the "easy" research, it has lots of great tips for how to take the next steps to find the more difficult records I need. There are tons of websites and suggestions for sources. Very useful.

Wow, what a wealth of information. It is stories but with each story there is an explanation of how and where the information was obtained. It's very entertaining as well. I won this book. Megan Smolenyak is a frequent speaker on Legacy Family Tree for their webinars. She is an excellent speaker. Get this book...you will not regret it.

Enjoying this book. Have been researching my ancestry for years but this has some good advice and references. Nice examples and hints on other places to look besides censuses, like researching neighbors to find a person's story.

"Who Do You Think You Are? The Essential Guide To Tracing Your Family History" is not only a superb starter manual for those just beginning to do their family research, but is also a great refresher for the more advanced genealogist. I know this to be true from experience. While I have owned this book for months now, it has taken me quite awhile to finish it because I kept stopping to take notes and getting sidetracked by checking out the websites listed in the book.And its not enough that this book has provided many new avenues for my genealogy research, but being an enjoyable read as well differentiates it from a mere instruction manual. Not only did I enjoy the humor which is sprinkled throughout, like when Megan refers to herself as, "...the most proportionate new citizen", but I also thought that her examples using the famous and infamous made the illustrations much more interesting. For instance, you will never guess the occupation listed on Al Capone's WWI draft registration, its rather amusing!The middle of the book contains a glossy paper section with color photos of the celebrities profiled on the first season of the U.S. version of "Who Do You Think You Are?". If you have not yet viewed these shows (which are available online on NBC's website) then I'd recommend you wait to read this section as it may contain "spoilers" for you. The great thing about these profiles is that they contain little golden nuggets of information that do not appear in the shows. One example is the book shares a fact about what Lisa Kudrow's father did upon retirement that isn't mentioned in the show. But I'm not going to spoil it for you, you'll just have to watch the show and read the book to find out what it is!

Though I haven't finished the book, it's a great resource Whether just starting out in research or a bit more advanced. Lots of helpful websites listed, but probably needs some updating, EX: many of the US GenWeb Project sites are no longer accessible.

Bold, simple perfection. A soft voice with weighty joy and expectation that craves the reader not only to hold up the dynamic color cutouts to the light but to read again and again. This book is an instant classic and pure magic. It fills the senses with joy. The light and angles of each page design are expertly crafted. And the heart and soul in the story with its comfortable cadence of makes each page turn an adventure.

I gasped when I opened the package. It’s as close as I’ve ever gotten to holding a book from another planet. This is a book that needs to be a book. Not an ebook or a blog or a podcast or a one-day idea. The text inside is like a blessing to the world. And it begs to be read outside. I imagine the author thought if I could just say one thing, what would it be, and this is the result. I’m so glad this book found a home at Candlewick. And I hope it’s given to children old and young around the world. My L.O. was immediately drawn to it too.

This book is such a gift (and will now be one of my go-to's for every gift-giving occasion). The words are the best kind to repeat over and over to your kids. The design feels like magic. Both my 2 and 5 year old have turned it around, held it up to windows, flipped pages back and forth, and wondered "where did the red go? what makes blue?" It's beautiful to look and and beautiful to read. Exactly what you want to put in your children's hands!

From the very first turn of the page, which casts a gorgeous mandala shadow onto my hand, I was drawn into its sturdy die-cut frame and stained-glass creativeness. The poetic prose match perfectly with the play of translucent-jewel toned inserts that radiate around a bright yellow sun, together illuminating the story of the sun's effect on the water cycle while at the same time reflecting the story back onto the reader. You cannot but hold it up to the light at each turn! It's truly mesmerizing and joy-inducing. This book is very clever and artfully profound. It will certainly delight young children but it has a wider outreach due to its unique and beautiful presentation of both spirituality and natural scientific facts.This book is an absolute exuberant celebration of life. With few words, it reminds us to be mindful of our consumption, of our relationship to mother earth and of our connection to every living thing. It is truly an awakening. This book is the full package: creative concept, engaging story; good for young and old...and it is devotedly dedicated to STEAM. Caldecott Honor winner Becker has created his first board book and what a beauty it is! The book almost glows with light and comes fully alive when raised toward the sun or a lamp where the colored circles shine. As the pages turn, light is celebrated. The way that it warms land, sips the sea, makes the rain, makes crops grow, and lights the moon. Particularly though, the light in each person is celebrated.This board book is wonderfully simple and exceptionally designed. As pages turn, the primary colors overlap to form secondary colors and a complete rainbow, yet another way that light enters our lives. The poetry is effective and evocative, speaking to the power of light in our world. Still, it is the design and colors that truly make this book something particularly special.Just right for learning colors and seeing a little one’s connection to the world. Appropriate for ages 1-3.

In his newest title, You Are Light (Candlewick Studio, an imprint of Candlewick Press, March 26, 2019), Aaron Becker, Caldecott Honor winner for Journey, first in a trilogy followed by Quest and Return, takes a single word, die-cuts, an original poem and frosted acetate to fashion a book glowing through combinations of twelve hues and resplendent words.This four stanza poem, the first in free verse and the following three with the second and fourth phrases rhyming, speaks simple truths but author Aaron Becker leaves each thought open to interpretation. In each of these a different type of figure of speech is used. I have never been one to count the days until a book release, but ever since Aaron Becker's "Journey" came out, I have eagerly awaited each of his book's releases. "You Are Light," is yet again, another amazing book. The age recommendation is 4-8. However, as a teacher, I have read it to all of my students, ages 5-11, and all of the students have loved it. When the book is held up to the light, they all have whispered "Whoa." The younger kids talk about the colors while the older kids talk about the painted patterns. In today's world, where much attention is given to the "Sensational," Aaron Becker's "You Are Light" brings us the hushed wonder that is truly magical.

This is truly a special, unique book. The photos here do not do it justice - it's breathtaking in person, especially when held up to the light. It's the rare children's book that is simple enough to share with a tiny child, and thoughtful enough for an adult to find rewarding on multiple reads. I suspect it's also one of those books that my kids will rediscover at different stages in their development. The format would appeal to any child, but there is so much more depth inside.
