I read "Journey of the Universe" as a part of an online CourseA lecture series of the same name. In a video interview, author Mary Evelyn Tucker drew a metaphor to the "Journey" being a trip down a river. She said she expected "arrows and barbs" to be shot the right bank where the mechanistic scientists reside, and from the left bank from where the fundamentalist Christian reside. This phenomena of pushback from these two differing perspectives exemplifies where the content of this book does reside. It is this reviewer’s opinion that it not meant to be a science book. Nor is it meant to be a book on religion. It instead looks at the current science in many fields through the perspective of religious and spiritual narrative. This reviewer found the information presented in a respectful way, drawing us into, and asking us to, join in a sense of awe of the universe around us.I identified two principles in the text related Tucker's comment about "arrows and barbs" from the two sides of the river. The first is the principle is what I label as "definitional dissonance” in “Exploring the Gap between Science and Religion." Both sides would find information in the book to be an anomoly to their model/representation of the universe. The second principle is that they have a choice to either reject the information or change their model. One way that a science-centric thinker would reject the information would be to question the qualifications of the scientists that contributed to the book. Having heard this critique in a casual discussion, I did a network search of each scientist listed in the book. This review easily found each to have extensive credentials.

Managing to tell the history of the Universe in just 120 pages : what a beautiful and stunning accomplishment !This is the story that all of us should read, or hear about !There's a DVD in which Brian Swimme tells this modern tale of our fantastic adventure, and it ought to be shown in every school in the country. This book is just a pure jewel.Perfect.Brillant.PS : I had a publisher buy the French rights of it and I had the great pleasure and honour of translating it into French !

Not incredibly technical (and that's okay by me), but it's a wondrous story of the Universe, Big Bang style, in simpler terms. It almost has a poetic feel to it as the story is told as a continuing unfolding of the Universe with life on Earth being a part of the bigger story. It tells how our "smaller" story of humanity fits into the picture and poses the emergence of humans as the Universe looking back at and pondering itself. I found it to be a very beautiful saga of everything!

This is a life changing read for those who value their Spiritual foundation, their understanding of Cosmology and an effort to walk faithfully and knowledgeably in this century. The book gives a great overview of current science of the creation of the Universe and our evolution. It gives great data in a way that is understandable to the layman. It is not iconoclastic and pejorative towards the reader. This open style of writing is welcome and inviting. It is a great place to start a journey of understanding Cosmology.I invite spiritual seekers to read this book and use it to add to their spiritual practice of reflecting and mindful respect for our earth and the Universe.

For those whose spiritual quest goes beyond conventional religion and orthodoxy, this is a refreshing and delightful aid to enlightenment; for those who are bio and cosmic nerds with all the blinding 'facts', stats, projections and empirical data of science, but have intuitively glimpsed the underlying mystery and loving intelligence of creation's evolutionary journey, this book will elevate your human consciousness to new and daring heights. In essence 'Journey of the Universe' in clear, poetic prose reminds us - ever so elegantly - of how we got here (on an ever-so-bumpy ride at times) and how we are, and will continue to be, a living, breathing, evolving, integral part of this multi-dimensional, ever expanding universe - a universe that (from our Earthling perspective) has to be our reference point on all matters of coexistence, human dignity, justice, interdependence, and the overall flourishing of our little planet on the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Brian Swimme's _Journey of the Universe_ is by far the best book I have read in a decade! I have given copies of this book to countless people. Swimme is both a physicist and a poet. His book shows the great wonder of how the universe was created and how it is forever changing. He also notes that there are more galaxies within our universe than we can imagine. He has helped me to regain the wonder I felt as a child exploring the life around me with my field geologist father. The idea that we and all of life came from stardust is intriguing and exciting. For those of a spiritual nature, one gets the idea from Swimme that there is a guiding Intelligence that is part of the mystery that man will probably never completely understand. I appreciated this thought coming from a scientist.

This is a very readable explanation of the un-explainable for non scientists (and most scientists) and especially for those who know still think God is a person or a being. I can now grasp the wonder of the random universe created by the dynamic tension between energy forces and self organizing particles and waves of energy. The last half of the book paints a wonderful image of the 'recreation' of our planet in a cycle of destruction and recreation several times in its 4 billion year history. I cannot comprehend the immensity of the universe or the sense of time but I can see the the egg image of the earth with its thin layers of crust and molten center constantly changing and producing new life. We read this in our men's reading group at our church -- good discussion simulator.

This is a beautiful little book. The authors were inspired to write a concise history of the known universe using the language of artists and visionaries. I loved this book so much that I ordered two more copies for my son and daughter.

i returned this after getting about 10 pages in. i am wondering if this has been translated from another language? the writing was mistake filled and extremely general.it was so general that i felt i was reading one of my high school student's papers. the author made some very bold statements without giving specific credit to the studies he/she claimed regarding the findings. weird for a 'medical' book/paper.i am very interested in music therapy. this was going to be my first book on the subject.i will look elsewhere.

This book is good for an introduction on what the therapy can do and in what ways it's used. I appreciated the explanations of the different types of music therapy used. It is missing examples of these techniques are used clinically. Lastly, when using text to speech it reads the sources under the pictures so it would be nice to have a index of the credits rather than in the text.

I enjoyed this short book on music therapy. Good introduction to the topic. I learned a lot. Good case studies and examples. Concise information on an important topic.

M is for Malice (The Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries), by Sue Grafton

Amazon.com Review

"Every investigation has a nature of its own, but there are certain shared characteristics," explains private eye Kinsey Millhone in her 13th alphabetic outing. "Here's what you hope for: a chance remark from the former neighbor on a skip-trace, a penciled notation on the corner of a document, an ex-spouse with a grudge, the number on an account, an item overlooked at the scene of a crime. Here's what you expect: the dead ends, bureaucratic bullheadedness, the cul-de-sacs, trails that go nowhere or simply fade into thin air, denials, prevarications, the blank-eyed stares from all the hostile witnesses. Here's what you know: that you've done it before and you have the toughness and determination to pull it off again. Here's what you want: justice. Here's what you'll settle for: something equivalent, the quid pro quo." All of the above are on display in Grafton's latest entry in her increasingly popular series set in a thinly-disguised Santa Barbara, as the virtually ageless Kinsey finds and loses a missing heir and gets back an old lover.

From Publishers Weekly

Approaching middle age warily, PI Kinsey Millhone of the Southern California coast is mildly depressed, romantically vulnerable and in the process of reassessing her family ties. Yet, when it comes to her professional abilities, she's at the top of her form, as this deftly plotted and absorbing novel (her 13th appearance, after L Is for Lawless) proves. Bader Malek, a local industrial tycoon, has died, and his four sons now stand to inherit a substantial fortune. But one of them, Guy, has been missing since 1968. A drug addict, ne'er-do-well and all-around miscreant, Guy had been disinherited by his exasperated father shortly before he vanished. But that particular will has disappeared, and Kinsey has been hired by the family to find out if Guy is still alive and thus in line to collect his original portion of the estate. She quickly succeeds in locating him and brings back a sweet, guileless and totally reformed man. But is he? The three other brothers?a truly devious, arrogant and greedy lot?are deeply ambivalent about Guy's return. A murder in the family leaves the surviving Malek kin as prime suspects. This is a subtle and swiftly moving novel, pleasantly unpredictable, with an agreeable overlay of smoldering romance, as fellow PI and former lover Robert Dietz reenters Kinsey's life. Grafton's heroine?more introspective, yet still feisty and surefooted?leads this finely tuned and at times electrifying tale to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. 1,000,000 first printing. #478,084 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading Grafton's P.I. Kinsey Millhone's series since the beginning 'A is for Alibi'. Every book can be read as a stand alone, but to truly appreciate the series evolvement and character development, should be read in order. M is for Malice does not disappoint. There is a little of Kinsey's quirkiness in most of us, that adds to the series charm. Her innate sense of seeing justice done at all costs and her continued persistence adds to Kinsey's appeal. Some of the plots are more predictable, and some can be a little outlandish (L is for Lawless). I don't always understand the negative reviews, and I'm sure Grafton's intent is to be enjoyable and entertaining, as well as plausible. She writes with whim and wit, based on personal experience. I always look forward to reading Kinsey Millhone's next investigation.

What can you say about Sue Grafton other than she is a great mystery writer. Kinsey Milhone is an ex-cop and has her own detective agency and never much of a sex life if that what your looking for, go elsewhere. This is a traditional gumshoe story with action and danger for our heroine. After some spotty success writing books, Grafton changed to writing screenplays for TV and movies. With the success of her first Alphabet series book ' A is for Alibi' in 1982 it has continued to date. I first discovered her books when I came across 'G is for Gumshoe' (pub 1990) in a recycle center in 2000, I proceeded to local bookstores and Amazon to acquire all of this series up until the current at the time 'O is For Outlaw'. It's always great when you come across a great series in progress as it's a joy just reading book after book from a great writer. Much like 'binge watching TV series on Netflix nowadays. Only problem with an ongoing series is waiting for the next book. Grafton has done only a couple of yearly books and mostly every other year since 'P is for Peril' in 2001. It is now up to just plain 'X' in 2015 and will end with 'Z is for Zero'. I'm hoping she has Y & Z completed as she is 75 now and I'm 70 and don't want to miss the conclusion of this great series.

This is a very aptly named book for at the heart of the mystery and the entire book is the issue of malice. When a wealthy man dies it turns out that the Will disinheriting his black sheep son is nowhere to be found, giving him a share of the inheritance. But nobody has seen him since he was a teen and nobody knows where he is living, or even if he is still alive. Kinsey's cousin is the lawyer dealing with the estate, so she hires Kinsey to find out. This is one of those mystery books where everybody "knows" what the situation is, who the good guys are and who the villain is - until the investigation starts. Not just an interesting and well-constructed mystery, this book is a study in how the "facts" people take for granted and build their lifeview upon can be distorted, misinterpreted or outright wrong, and how easily it happens.I am a fan of the Kinsey Milhone series overall, which are all well worth reading. But I think this particular book in the series is one of the standouts. You do not have to read previous books in the series to understand what is going on - Sue Grafton is a master at inserting just enough background information to let new readers know where they stand - so you can read this book as a standalone. But the series as a whole is well worth reading from the start and I recommend that you do so. Just keep in mind that this series is set in the 1980s, a time when personal computers and the internet were not established - the computers at this time were primarily used by government departments and big business.

Good for a trans-Atlantic flight, but not as compelling as some of Sue Grafton's other mysteries. Nevertheless, I'm a sucker for anything that starts as a missing persons case. A poignant tale of a list sheep who wanted to be found by his estranged family. Unfortunately, their motive in searching for him is NOT what he had hoped for. It's set in the early 80's, when the quirks of individual typewriters could still provide crucial clues!

The last few novels in this series seemed to take a detour, and Kinsey was a little detached. In this one she applies her dogged tenacity to bring truth to light, to right old wrongs, and to speak for the underdog. She grows to genuinely care for someone simply out of compassion; her committment to this case is beyond her usual sense of justice. I have come to think that Kinsey is a metaphor for the author's own life: When we first met her she was fiesty and proudly independent. With time she came to trust a handful of people, on her terms, of course, and then came the devastating news that she had family! Eeks! But good for Kinsey: However resistant she may appear to be when it comes to change, she is at least willing to consider a different point of view. She is willing to grow, albeit begrudingly, and her story is delightful.

I've always found, for the most part, Ms. Grafton's alphabet series with Kinsey Millhone fast, light, and enjoyable reads. This one is no different. After reading most all the series books, Kinsey's character and quirks are extremely well developed. As a character, I find her enjoyable and real. With usually only one murder, Ms. Grafton develops her stories around them pretty well. Here, the everyday PI runs across a snobbish, in-fighting wealthy family. Many families have a black sheep. This one is no different. Who's lying and who's truthful? There are some twists. One really can't figure who did what until close to the end. As is typical with others in this series, Ms. Grafton, at times, becomes too involved in descriptive details. Other than that, I enjoy the series. "M" is, I feel, worth your time

One of the things I so admire about Sue Grafton is her skill in creating a character with can love and cheer for. She has flaws, like we do, but she is a vulnerable and kick ass PI. I love the way Grafton unravels the mystery, finds justice just because its the right thing to do; Kinsey is a law and order chick and I love that about her.

"Penetrating ... lively and accessible ... Paying closer attention to function words [Pennebaker] advises, can help us understand the social relations that those words reflect. Unfortunately, we might not be able to pay proper attention until we're all equipped with automatic word counters. This book is fine. It isn't amazing in that it was not exactly what I was looking for when I read it. Pennebaker has a very interesting line of study, that is, looking at how our words clue others in on our internal emotional states. The book is full of examples that I actually found helpful, in contrast to those that found it to have TOO MANY examples. My only problem is that these discoveries do not seem all that applicable for someone who wants to use just their eyes. When I bought the book, I guess I kind of expected to be able to skim over documents and effectively be able to pick out elements of an individual's personality. But as I read the book, I learned that they effectively use a computer program to do it. Maybe they use the computer program in order to quickly discern patterns in word choice that can be useful, but that doesn't seem to require a personal skill. It does not seem that you would have to know much about the subject in order to use the program and get results. So it felt a little pointless to be reading the book. The other thing is that it really is based on statistics. This was not quite enough to convince me that the language used provides a window into the soul, at most a very fogged up window. I also thought that some of the studies and evidence he gave could have been improved. If I understood correctly, there was a part in which he compared the works of maybe only 20 or so playwrights? I would expect that number to be well over 100, at least, in order to really show something. All of that said, the great thing about this book is Pennebaker's passion for his work. He throws in very natural sounding humor that made me want to learn more from him. Even though I was not fully able to understand the information he presented, his style seemed to make clear to me that, while he believes in the idea of his book, the studies really are still a work in progress. If you are looking for a different way to understand people, this book may not be the best choice; however, it does provide insight into a relatively new idea, and his presentation of it is quite interesting :)

Provoked by the reviews in the WSJ and NYTs, I bought this book while I was away. It was there when I got home and disrupted my readjustment to local time by keeping me up late. The writing is clear and lively. There are appealing little eruptions of playfulness. The story is put together from lots of research findings from the author and his buddies and probably some enemies. Here's a tiny sample of riveting facts you will learn:If you ask people to fill out a survey, they use more "I" words (I, me, mine) if you put a mirror in front of them. 2. People believe that women talk more than men. Not true, the numbers say we all talk the same amount, but women use 12% more pronouns. 3. Shakespeare's characters, including the women, all talk like men. Woody Allen's all talk like women. 4. Writing about emotional topics improves the physical and emotional health of those who do it.Even the notes at the end are worth reading. Only here do you learn that defendants who use "I" a lot are more likely to be innocent, but "me" is used more by the truly guilty, and get suggestions for further reading like "The Psychology of Secrets" and "Strangers in a Strange Lab" (argh, but yes I will buy it).It must be thrilling to be a Pennebaker student or colleague. He is so engaging, he loves them so much.

James Pennebaker studies words. Originally interested in the beneficial effect of writing about personal trauma, he and his students developed software to analyze this writing. Their investigation soon expanded to include spoken conversations, emails, political speeches, and other language samples. They discovered that much can be learned from the short "stealth words" that we barely notice, but that make up more than half of our speech. "Pronouns (such as I, you, we, and they), articles (a, an, the), prepositions (e.g., to, for, over), and other stealth words broadcast the kind of people we are."Pennebaker summarizes his trauma research, noting that "people who benefit from writing express more optimism, acknowledge negative events, are constructing a meaningful story of their experience, and have the ability to change perspective as they write." Searching for reliable linguistic indicators of these processes identified writing style rather than more substantive content words. The resulting LIWC software works well regardless of a text's content.Using both research findings and representative everyday examples, Pennebaker reviews what he has learned. Topics addressed include gender, status and social class, personality, leadership style, deception, interpersonal attraction, and group solidarity. The author not only presents conclusions from his own research, but links to supporting findings using non-linguistic methods. Specific findings include:- LIWC correctly identifies an author's gender 72% of the time using writing style. This increases to 76% when content words are included. (Human guesses range from 55 to 65%.)- On detecting depression: "Sadness generally causes people to focus inwardly. Pronouns tend to track people's focus of attention, and when in great emotional or physical pain, they tend to use I-words at high rates. Sadness, unlike most other emotions, is associated with looking back into the past and into the future. In other words, people tend to use past- and future-tense verbs more when they are sad or depressed compared to other strong emotions."- "No system has ever been shown to reliably catch liars at rates higher than 65 percent. And even those with hit rates in that neighborhood (including me) have done so in highly controlled and artificial circumstances."- "Linguistic style matching" across nine categories of function words occurs within the first 15 to 30 seconds of an attentive conversation. It is generally beyond conscious awareness. LSM profiles can predict a number of things better than chance, including whether a "speed dating" couple will pursue a further relationship after their initial four-minute discussion.Pennebaker clearly wants to share, not just his insights, but the methods used to achieve them. Much of his research was done collaboratively, not just with students and fellow researchers, but with public figures, professionals in other fields, and anyone else with interesting documents. Readers are pointed to web sites that let them experiment with Pennebaker's techniques and a version of his LIWC software is available for more in-depth investigations. An appendix includes "A Handy Guide for Spotting and Interpreting Function Words in the Wild."This book is an accessible summary of James Pennebaker's work with helpful citations of similar research by others. It serves as a guide to more technical discussions of text analysis through an extensive Bibliography and References section--and pointers to downloadable research reports from the author's web site.
