Operation Crusader is a fascinating, challengingly complex subject. Here we see British forces beating their German opponents in a swirling armored clash just 18 months after an overwhelming defeat in France. The British advantage in numbers was about 3 to 2 in the air, and 5 to 4 in tanks - hardly overwhelming. British equipment, training and tactical doctrine were below German standards. Axis leadership came from no less than Erwin Rommel, one of Germany's best armored commanders. How, then, did the British pull off this victory?This title gives a useful, but not completely clear short summary of the battle. Overall narrative flow bogs down in the battle's minutiae. To give the author his due, this is an extremely complex subject. For example, the back-and-forth tank and infantry battles at Sidi Rezegh rank among the most chaotic ground actions in World War II. There are issues of morale, equipment quality, tactical doctrines, and decisions made under pressure by overworked and battle-exhausted commanders - a lot to condense into 94 pages.It takes a re-read to get at the flow of this complicated battle. Here the carefully annotated maps are helpful, although you may find yourself paging between different maps to trade off between geographic scope and detail. The illustrations are good, with informative captions giving additional insight into tactical details, weapon systems, and personalities.I found the author's account of Rommel's "dash to the wire" entertaining. Determined to keep up the momentum of his daring thrust into the British rear, the Desert Fox spent a cold night in the desert, his command vehicle trapped on the wrong side of the border fence, all alone as Eighth Army tanks and trucks rolled around in the dark, oblivious to his proximity and helplessness.In the end, as the smoke of this chaotic campaign cleared, the British had persevered, aided by General Auchinleck's ramrod determination, a stronger logistical base, and the availability of reinforcements to assist. The British victory was probably more important than most historians realize, and it was a near-run thing. Had Rommel won instead, he might have been in a good position to finish off the British in the desert in the next year, when setbacks in the Far East, Mediterranean, and the U-boat war drained the British war effort. This title makes a useful introduction to an under-appreciated campaign.

This volume seems to be the missing piece to complete Osprey's coverage of the North African phase of WW2. Although Osprey's books are generally leagues ahead of other publishers in staying specific to forces, commanders, battles plans and the actual events that occurred in the execution of various campaigns throughout the entire breadth of history, there have been some volumes that were better than others. The book on the epic Gazala battle was one of the weaker offerings, while the books on Tobruck and Alamein are great. One of the best features of this book is a plethora of photos, many of them previously unseen by this jaundiced eye, long accustomed to seeing the same pictures and footage of WW2. Also, the original illustrations in this volume are great, especially on the back of the disappointment I felt with the Gazala volume.Operation Crusader was a sprawling attempt by the British to relieve the garrison in Tobruck as well as an attempt to lure Rommel's armor into a pitched battle with the aim of defeating them decisively. Only one of those aims was met and Crusader went awry, while the Afrika Korps maintained a disciplined concentration and mixture of forces, the British tended to segregate their various arms (armour, infantry, artillery) and string them out out in a way that meant that individual formations could not support one another. If one brigade or company came upon the Afrika Korps, it was totally outnumbered and outgunned.A major slugging match broke out unexpectedly near the airfield of Sidi Rezegh, a gateway to Tobruck and several British (and Commonwealth) units that had accrued much experience in desert warfare were nearly wiped out. Not content with breaking the spearhead of the British attack, Rommel then struck toward the British rear, even driving his vehicles right through the British HQ, nearly cutting off the entire British strike force at the Egyptian border. I must mention that at no time did the Germans have even half the number of tanks of his enemies. I must throw in my two cents here. Unlike many of the readers I find the relentless facts thrown out to be quite interesting. The way the author documents what is known about Holmes is excellent. I also agree with those who find his arrangement of these facts to be rather dry but at the same time I find them fascinating. One thing that does throw me, though, is that the author asserts from the start that Holmes did not kill nearly as many people as he is credited with, and later casts doubt on the fact that he could be considered a serial killer at all, and that furthermore when he threatens a man who had complained about debris from his building (Holmes had a pistol and a knife!) and was only saved by a policeman that this is "uncharacteristic" of Holmes. By this point in the book no less than five people had been killed by Holmes, and in its broadest definition serial killer denotes someone who kills either for pleasure or financial gain -- clearly Holmes was at least a sociopath, and the fact that he had no compunction about killing children leads one to believe he was no doubt a serial killer for all practical purposes. It seems the author strains mightily to demythologize Holmes to the point of trying to ignore the fact that he was pretty much a monster of sorts. Worth the read for anyone interested in Mudgett aka H.H. Holmes.

This is a great read. I had read enough about Holmes to know that Devil in the White City was greatly embellished (it's a great story, nonetheless), and then when Adam mentioned this book while my wife and I were taking one of his tours (the history of Graceland Cemetary - check it and his other tours out on his website Mysterious Chicago), I ordered it right away.It was fascinating to learn the real history of such a notorious figure, and how the legend of HH Holmes grew over the decades. This book also shows a fascinating glimpse of how journalism and police work was in the late 19th century. I highly recommend this book.

Extremely dry. Though this book is full of information regarding the life of the notorious H. H. Holmes, it is very boring and after struggling through half of it I lost interest entirety. It is straight forward and fact based, which is good for content but it was so dully presented as to be unreadable. It would be more suitable for reference material than entertainment.

A boring collection of essentially footnotes. There is no flow or continuity or literary arc. Just a recitation of one-line newspaper accounts that may or may not be true. A good editor might have been able to rescue this mess but in its present form it is nigh well unreadable. A waste of time.

Probably the best book out there on H. H. Holmes. Adam Selzer cut through all the malarkey and gets the true story out in a sensible way. I truly enjoyed reading it and am reading it a second time so I did not miss something.

Many hours of tedious research must have gone into this book, but I found it a very slow and tedious read. I bought this book after reading Devil in White City and was anxious to read it over Spring break to learn more about H.H. Holmes. I couldn't stop reading DIWC. I had to keep putting Selzer's book down - too dull for me.

Well written but a long and tedious read. If you really analyze, only about 75% is really related to the actual killings. The rest is filler, in my opinion.If you have insomnia and need to nod off....this is the book. Lots of detail and characters. Be prepared. You will end up knowing a lot more than you probably wanted to.

Selzer does a good job of laying out a timeline and the facts. So if you're looking for that, you'll find it here. Where the book came up short for me was in the narrative. It became tedious pretty quickly, especially if you've read on Holmes' story in the past. This book would be a good primer for anyone looking for an expository on the details and timeline, as opposed to all that but in a more narrative form such as Devil in the White City.

Interesting book! Informative and interesting way of viewing history of war and problems that still lies in planning. I've been to Lebanon and know about Lebanon quiet well, but haven't known of the effect of planning that led to civil war. Well written, great research and effort, and lots of information. I highly recommend reading this book. Thank you Hiba for the great book!

This was going to be a fathers day present for my dad, who has been an avid BMW enthusiast for the last 30 years. He still loves his 1976 R90/6, his 2001 R1100R, and his 2010 R1200RT. I wanted something that would give him a good visual representation of some of the beautiful art deco bikes BMW came out with, all the way to the modernized mechanical creations of today. I wasn't disappointed.The book won't cover absolutely every bike or sub group the company has made, but it does a great job of getting a great amount of the most popular and inspired vehicles BMW put two wheels on. It's not overly filled with info on each page, but doesn't lack in that department. It can be appreciated for either the pictures, the information, or both. My dad usually just puts the gifts he gets into "the collection" but this one is always out on a coffee table or the kitchen table. I've even caught my mom, who's more into gardening, browsing the book a little bit recently.At around $30, this is a great gift idea for someone you know might appreciate it.

I was at the Las Vegas showing of the Art of the BMW...when they had it at the Venetian. I thought it was the Art of the Motorcycle...curator from Metropolitan Museum of Art from NY was there...also reps from both the West and East coast BMW...so it was a great time to meet all present. Also met some of the movie stars and owners from around world...that had put their bikes up for display...all glass and stainless steel...was quite a display. It was just too hot at that time...and they had just imploded the Sands...and the bike riders that came to show...had to park around the piles of debris. We had a fire that destroyed everything...and I lost the book that BMW gave to me for working at Registration...and it had extra pages in the front...it was a limited edition...but thank you for this book.

Oh gosh, my husband was thrilled to get this second book after the previous 85 years of BMW motorcycles. He just loves these machines, to look or ride, it's his bike! The seller was timely and book in good order.

Beautiful book for a library, coffee table, garage, or as a gift. I've personally visited the museum these images came from and the book does an excellent job of representing the bikes.

Unsure how the R1200c was left out.Short-lived for sure but a very cool looking cruiser in my opinion. Maybe not well loved but this is called the "art" of bmw, no? Very cool book nonetheless and a must for any beemer owner.

Purchased book as a gift for a passionate BMW rider. Photography is beautiful. He's still working his way through all the bikes. I imagine this book sitting out in a prominent place for his fellow riders to read.

Great photos and some good info. Some bikes are missing but not a big deal.

Simply a gorgeous book! It misses a few models, but for my brother - a BMW owner and fan, it was great entertainment. He spent many many hours ogling the fabulous photos.

I've read the entire book and feel that there should have been more information in regards to kundalini. It seemed to put more emphasis on astrology. That just me, but it was an eye opener. I would recommend this if you are experiencing kundalini.
