Walter A. Elwell (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is emeritus professor of biblical and theological studies at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, where he taught for twenty-eight years. He has edited numerous reference works. Robert W. Yarbrough (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is professor of New Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. He has authored, coauthored, or translated several books and is coeditor of the Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament.

Like the OT Version, I bought this for a class and found it very helpful! Great depth and many interesting historical and archeological insights. This was required for a seminary course and supplemented with other readings. I consider myself a beginner student of the individual NT books. This, by itself, would not be sufficient for an overview of the NT. It is a great supplement that I will return to. I would strongly recommend this for Christian High School upper level or entry level undergrad students.

In "Encountering the New Testament", the chapters move sequentially, which reads like a standard text book. It wasn't bad, however I was hoping the format would have been then same as "Encountering the Old Testament" which is broken down like an outline, and contains a chapter summary before an entire section, (i.e. Pentateuch, History, Poetry and Wisdom, Major Prophets, Minor Prophets). In "Encountering the Old Testament" the pre-chapter summaries allowed the reader to understand the intent of each section before diving into each book separately, this lacking in "Encountering the New Testament". The information is still really good, however for someone who hasn't had a formal teaching of the chronology of Paul's travels I found it disorienting.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the study and reading of this book. I also took the time to answer the questions posed at the end of each chapter. The study of New Testament survey gave me a detailed glimpse into the background of each individual book contained within the New Testament. This book shared with me insight into the authorship, the date, and the place of which they were written. It also gave me insight into what life was like during the time these God-inspired books were written. Perhaps more importantly, it also shared with me as to why these books were written by men who had such zeal for Christ that they were willing to count the cost, even if it meant certain death at the hands of their persecutors.As a believer preparing for full time ministry as a missionary overseas, I was most struck by this book's description of Paul's life and his numerous missionary journeys. Paul took at least three missionary journeys for certain, but possibly several more. His overwhelming love for Christ and his desire to see others saved from the eternal torments of hell is what drove Paul all across the Roman world. Like all New Testament believers, Paul was willing to suffer persecution, torture, and suffering, all for the sake of the cross. What a great model of inspiration Paul is to not only me, but for all believers who are charged with the task of sharing the Gospel to the end of the earth.Finally, it is my hope from the knowledge that I have gained from the completion of this book, that God will use it not for selfish ambition or gain, but solely for the purpose to glorify God, especially amongst the people that God will place in my path. I have indeed learned much, and I look forward to sharing this knowledge in my Bible studies amongst the Roma people of Albania, where my family and I will soon begin serving.

The book begins with a major, inexcusable flaw that destroys its credibility from the get-go. From the 'Preface' on page vii it goes directly to page xi, the backside of it is page x, and the facing page a duplicate page xi. In other words, pages xiii and ix are completely missing and page xi printed twice. This is a college level textbook?

I purchased the "Encountering the Old Testament Biblical Studies" and found the material very well formatted, written material was on point and the graphics were great. I purchased "Encountering the New Testament" with the same expectation of this publication meeting the same requirements and I was not disappointed. Seminary and Biblical Students as well as Laypersons will find this publication most helpful.

I purchased this for use in one of my college classes called "Survey of the New Testament." It is a great textbook packed with easy to understand information telling of the history and characters of the New Testament and how it evolved from many of the Old Testament books. This will remain in my library for years to come, and I would recommend it to anyone who has a desire to understand the history and characters during the life and times of Jesus Christ.

My daughter used this book for her high school homeschool education in Bible. She especially enjoyed the background information about each gospel writer and book. Some of the study questions were too in depth for use with the time we had. Overall, it is a good book and very informative.

I have learned so much from this textbook! It is easy to understand and is a great reference for the Bible student or someone who wants to increase their knowledge of the Bible. It makes the Word of God more clear and helps put the Bible in historical context. This book has answered a lot of "why" questions. At first I had difficulty loading the CD on my laptop that has Windows 7. But it ran once I tried without using the included instructions and just let it load and looked for the setup directions. It works great!! The CD is just like the book but with great extras! It has built in quizzes, pictures, music, maps, and a glossary with audio pronunciation! I also found it loaded fine on my desktop that has Windows XP. If you haven't been able to load the CD, try again! It is an awesome addition that will help you grow in the Word!
