As with some of the other Short Cuts volumes, this one offers an outstanding chapter ("Defining Science Fiction") that covers history and theory in a remarkably thorough and accessible fashion. The other two chapters cover the Hollywood industrial context of production, including interesting stuff on production design and sound, and a case study on STAR WARS: EPISODE I -- THE PHANTOM MENACE. While the first chapter is ideal for use in an undergrad/grad classroom setting, the other two are less adaptable. Nevertheless, the quality of scholarship is very good, with many short examples employed throughout.
Inconsistent. Incomplete. Boring. There are thousands of books on this subject more thoroughly researched, complete and exciting than this volume. Wasted money!
This book is overall interesting, to the point and condenses a lot of film theory in a small space. However, the anaylsis of the science fiction film is a bit on the thin side. A better book would be Screening Space, or Alien Zone II ed. by Kuhn
