A freethinking member of AA tells his story of a brief, but wild, drinking career, and decades of recovery in AA. He has an obvious depth of knowledge regarding AA history, and he offers a simple formula for secularists to maintain sobriety absent AA's religious mumbo jumbo. That alone is worth the price of admission. What merits the 5 STAR rating is the professionalism of the presentation and 5 STAR writing skills not often found in today's self-publishing world.Lauritsen was something of an activist in organizing a New York-based campaign against the use of the very religious Lord's Prayer in supposedly non-religious AA meetings. He pioneered this brave protest in 1976, and change is occurring, albeit at a snail's pace. Few readers will be in harmony with the author on every issue, so "take what you want, and leave the rest," as the more progressive of AA folks are fond of saying.This is a valuable piece of the growing body of literature that supports the atheist/agnostic in AA.

For a tiny book this is intellectual dynamite. Great stuff for agnostics and freethinkers in recovery. There is HOPE!
Great history of AA.
This is a truly excellent work, well worth reading. While I do not agree with everything said, this book had a wonderful impact on me. I feel like a more free person, better able to think for myself about things. It literally enhanced my free thinking powers. Even though I have long thought myself a free thinker, certainly relative to the often conformist mindset which can so often predominate within the rooms of AA, this book helped me to see things in an even more fresh, original, open-minded, critical and clear manner. I wish I could get every member to read it.Big praise!Thanks, JLAdam N
