From the Back Cover

Captured by the Russian army during World War II and convicted of being a "Vatican spy", American Jesuit Father Walter J. Ciszek spent some 23 agonizing years in Soviet prisons and the labor camps of Siberia. He here recalls how it was only through an utter reliance on God's will that he managed to endure. He tells of the courage he found in prayer - a courage that eased the loneliness, the pain, the frustrations, the anguish, the fears, the despair. For, as Ciszek relates, the solace of spiritual contemplation gave him an inner serenity upon which he was able to draw amid the "arrogance of evil" that surrounded him. Learning to accept even the inhuman work of toiling in the infamous Siberian gulags as a labor pleasing to God, he was able to turn the adverse forces of circumstance into a source of positive value and a means of drawing closer to the compassionate and never-forsaking Divine Spirit.

As others have pointed out this is an amazing testament to faith and how seeking God's will can enable one to endure great suffering. Fr Ciszek reminds me of some of the great saints who suffered terribly. This is a five no ten star story. The reason i gave it book 4 stars is it can be a little repetitive but that is minor. One thing a reader could misinterpret is the nature of Divine providence. The manner it is presented can lead one to think the God caused this evil to bring about something greater however God does not cause evil rather evil enters the world through the free will/choices of mankind. Once that evil is present God can help the open and willing disciple to overcome it and even turn it to good for the glory of God via the pouring out of grace. All in all this is a great book and should be read by anyone seeking to understand suffering in the world.

Like Viktor Frankl's description in Man's Search for Meaning of living in the Nazi death camps, that surviving is altogether centered on finding meaning in life regardless of the circumstances, so the Jesuit priest, Father Walter Ciszek, draws the same conclusions from five years in solitary confinement as a political prisoner and then about 17 years in being sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. He says survival was based on the meaning he derived from the simplicity of his Catholic faith. He describes his solitary imprisonment as his "school of prayer." In living the hardships of hard labor in an Arctic climate, he tells the lesson of finding and learning to do the Will of God which presented itself though so many humiliations. This is a great spiritual treatise that we can use to learn and imitate what he did, especially when living in extreme conditions or just bearing with very difficult circumstances of life.

A great read about a man's tale of growing in relationship to God through an extraordinary journey of sufferings and imprisonment. This book held special meaning for me 12 years ago when I went through some challenges myself, and it was great to be able to read it again this time. A good companion book when you're going through tough times.

Just an outstanding personal story of survival, fortitude, and faith. Very easy read. One of the best books I've ever read - so helpful and meaningful on every level. I will read this book many times, for I cannot make it through my days without His help. Fr. Ciszek has simply explained what worked for him and shows us how to apply these truths to our situations. While my struggles do not compare to his experiences in Russia, I'm humbled that I never knew pain and suffering until now (as a senior). My lesson learned: I need to pick up my cross and follow Jesus to the end. This is the test, the truth, which leads to redemption and life everlasting.

If this book were only a piece of storytelling regarding the incredible events of Fr. Ciszek's life, it would still be thrilling and engaging. Yet this book is so much more - it is a profound reflection on the central core and questions of our faith, on God's divine will and providence, and how even this amazing and courageous priest struggled with doubts, self-reliance, and how to pray. What he learned, and how he learned it, sustained him through the worst of hardships, isolation, loneliness and sufferings; and it greatly has helped me to learn how to discern God's will and really depend on God's providence, even, if not especially, in the midst of suffering and doubts. This book ranks very high as one of the all-time best and most enjoyable books on faith that I have ever read. - Gil

A truly inspiring account from a spiritual perspective of a Catholic Priest imprisoned and continually persecuted by the Communist Government of the Soviet Union for 23 years. In spite of this Fr. Ciszek recounts many instances that his Faith in God allowed him to survive and minister to others. He was particularly impressed with the Faith of the Russian people surviving in spite of continual persecution and indoctrination against their Faith. Don't miss reading this book.

After reading many books on theology, history, prayer and modern cultural challenges to faith...this book was a godsend! The entire book serves to demonstrate what all the theology, history and prayer LOOKS like as lived in life on earth. Ciszek himself sums up the significance of life lessons he learned in Soviet prisons and gulags: "The air is full these days with talk of peace, of commitment, of fulfillment. Yet no one can know greater peace, no one can be more committed, no one can achieve a greater sense of fulfillment in his life than the man who believes in this truth of faith and strives daily to put it into practice. If it all seems too simple, you have only to try it to find how difficult it is." I will be recommending this book for years to come. You can't help but come away from this book filled with wonder at the daily opportunities you have to surmount challenges through humble submission to Christ. Easy? I still struggle. But after reading Ciszek's story, I feel more hopeful of making progress. The days have more rainbows than I deserve, and I see the opportunities to learn the truth of the gospel in the rough patches. Read this book, and you will be heartened and changed.

With this book Fr. Ciszek related the spirituality that sustained him throughout his years in prison and gulag concentration camps in Russia and Siberia. His discovery of God's will for him. The simplicity of his faith and the faith of the Russian people God brought to him and him to. It is a wonderful book which made me wonder and opened my eyes and spirit. Easy to read. No deep theological rumblings. Just God, life, and you.
