This book is very well worth the read. I learned more and was more challenged in the first third of the book. The final 2/3 dragged for me, including so very many personal anecdotes, like the day-by-day account of her Outward Bound program. In spite of the fact Ms. Friedan's biases show through so clearly, and that some of it was tedious reading, I still think it is one of the best books about aging out there - because it challenges preconceptions and myths. One of the premises I enjoyed most was Ms Friedan's concept that the years after 70 or so are basically uncharted territory, since only recently has life expectancy been extended beyond this age - humankind doesn't really know what the developmental stages of aging are, or what tasks we can accomplish in our later years
This book is a statement on how we need to view aging in terms other than "decline" and "worthlessness". Friedan shows how many people going into their sixth decade, and beyond, develop fruitful lives. I especially liked that people may move into their most creative periods.
The Fountain of Age brings to light the topics of aging, such as what to do to stay involved, in what kind of surroundings does one want to live there 3rd and 4th chapters of their lives.Friedan discovers the much needed topic of aging while giving a new paradigm- not all is doom and gloom.I loved the in depth discussion and narratives.A wonderful book for book groups!
What a surprise! I'd read a review, then I ordered this book and it came in large print! Friedan studied aging, among her many interests, and I look forward to finishing this weighty tome, my Christmas gift to myself. By Sandra
Im still reading it (I tend to read several books at one time). I find it very encouraging.
I enjoy reading Betty Friedan and she offers a lot of information which I haven't read anywhere else. Her non-medical approach appeals to me.
I was disappointed that the product was abridged. The tape was very good, but I wanted the entire book.
