This is a very informative and well written travel guide, which includes hotel and restaurant recommendations. DK's recommendations are usually reliable. One cavil: there is no mention of the Phoenix area light railway, which is an excellent way of getting to those parts of Phoenix and Tempe which its route covers. It is relatively cheap to use--an all day ticket costs $4.00--and is relatively new, very well maintained, extremely clean and perfectly safe. While it does not go to Scottsdale it does go to the wonderful Heard Museum with its rich collection of North American Indian (and other aboriginal peoples') artifacts. It should not have been omitted from this guide. While it is true that you can go to most places by rental car, and Phoenix downtown is disfigured by huge humbers of mammoth parking garages, the light railway is a pleasant, stressless and inexpensive way to get around.
I've bought the DK books for years, it has been my preferred travel guide for overseas trips. This one for Arizona disappoints. The paper quality is thinner and not "waxy" as in the past to avoid stains and wear--the entire book is thinner, and there is no map included as with other locations. Also, key sites are not listed (Antelope Canyon, for example). Internal layouts for key locations do not include maps (Canyon de Chelly, for example). This really seems geared for the fly-by in a car tourist who doesn't really want to experience anything. If this is the new style for DK, I'm no longer a fan.
I am a big fan of the DK Eyewitness Travel Books. This particular volume covers southern Arizona (the desert area), northern Arizona (the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff), and the Four Corners area (the Navajo Nation, Mesa Verde, and Monument Valley). I could have wished that this volume covered more of either Utah, New Mexico or Colorado making a thicker volume, but this one was more pinpointed. Information was current, and all of the helpful suggestions about visiting the Grand Canyon were spot on.My grandmother had tried to help us prepare for our trip by getting materials from AAA, but the four guide books she got from AAA paled in comparison to this one succinct volume. The short history and cultural explanation was perfect for helping my husband become acquainted with the area, and the hotel and restaurant suggestions in the back cover a range without being overwhelming like some guide books.The only correction to make since the publication of this volume is that the Toy and Doll Museum which was previously located in downtown Phoenix near Pioneer Square moved in April 2015 to a new location. That aside, I will continue to purchase DK Eyewitness Travel guides for their clarity, ease of reading, and photos. DK Eyewitness Travel guides also make it easy to decide how to manage your time and what to prioritize on your trip. Happy traveling!
