It's been over 10 years since GDW folded, taking its controversial last edition of Traveller out-of-print. Traveller: The New Era took the Rebellion/Imperial Civil War of Megatraveller to Armageddon, and beyond. The New Era was a time of rebuilding interstellar civilization.The setting was unpopular with many long-time Traveller players, who enjoyed the unchanging Imperium as a backdrop for their campaigns. So it was no surprise that when Traveller saw print post-GDW, the New Era was forgotten. Indeed, two editions were printed in parallel, both avoiding the cataclysmic events of the New Era. Marc Miller's Traveller (4th edition, or "T4") went back in time to the very beginning of the Third Imperium. T4 failed to catch on. The other edition, quite popular and still in print today is GURPS Traveller. This setting literally said "The Rebellion Never Happened," and proceeded with a somewhat tranquil Imperium.Enough backstory. Fast forward 10 years, and the New Era is now revisited in this new sourcebook. Written by Martin J. Dougherty, with approval by Marc Miller, so Out of the Darkness can be considered "canon." The setting is nearly 50 years after the time period of TNE, and the book fills in the timeline behind it. Out of the Darkness is rules-independent, and can be mated with any Traveller rules set you prefer.The sourcebook can be examined in three parts:1. Answering the questions of the Rebellion and the Collapse. This is probably the strongest part of Out of the Darkness. Reading through this section, I couldn't put the book down. What happened to Duke Craig? Margaret? Strephon? The Solomani? You'll find out here. It is a story of last-ditch defenses, and civilization collapsing as multiple waves of Virus wash over them. The Empress Wave, what's behind the Black Curtain, all is told here, and it doesn't disappoint.2. Events between the time set in GDW's New Era and the current day set in this sourcebook are depicted. I read through this section with vague discomfort, not sure what exactly it was bothering me.Yes, the Reformation Coalition and the Regency -- both staple settings of GDW's New Era -- get maligned. But the circumstances are plausible enough. Indeed, the Star Vikings' destiny makes more sense here than in GDW's New Era. There GDW wrote them as both idealistic do-gooders, yet reviled by history, a contradiction that never made sense to me. Out of the Darkness deftly explains this difference.Other political entities -- barely mentioned or unknown in GDW's TNE -- get a full write-up here. As all surviving organizations expand into the Wilds, their contact is long on squabbling, short on cooperation. I suppose it makes sense, but you'd think they'd be exhausted from 100 years of killing and death. Some brave peace agreements are made, but they are fragile.I think what became mildly annoying were the repeated RISK-style military invasions by all involved. Rather than sensible invade-then-consolidate military campaigns, many were 'push to the very end' drives to the capital worlds, often ending in the complete destruction of one or both sides. To be sure, this occasionally happens in wartime, and would be within the psychology of some of the political players, but it's a standard military strategy for all in Out of the Darkness. Insane pushes and cataclysmic battles make for great drama, but get a little tedious in repetition.Ironically, little has changed in 50 years. Instead of two entities in isolation -- the Reformation Coalition and the Regency -- in 1248 you have several governments with about roughly the same spread and strength in irregular contact. Most star systems in between are Wilds. The 4th Imperium, introduced here, has renounced expansion and is a minor player, leaving little indication of a bright future for reunification.Where the original TNE had the Regency as a setting for running "normal" Traveller campaigns, Out of the Darkness seems to lack a traditional background campaign area. I suppose the argument could be made that traditional players have ample in-print support through GURPS, but the exclusion here seems unnecessary.3. The last part of the sourcebook explains and defines the current setting for play. If you are already familiar with Traveller: TNE, then much is repeated from past publications. Still, it's good to have the information in one place.Overall, I'm satisfied with Out of the Darkness. The book is clearly self-published in appearance, but binding quality seems OK. I spotted typos every couple of pages, the kind that a spelling checker would miss: "To" instead of "too," etc. I also spotted a formatting error, a column heading that needed to be in a larger font and bolded. The manuscript needed another look with human eyes.Illustrations ranged from mediocre to good. I would have like to have seen more maps, given the amount of history and military campaigns covered here.Minor gripes aside, I am pleased with this addition to the New Era. Dougherty is a good writer who knows how to make history vibrant and interesting to read. As well, it is clear that a lot of thought went into the new setting. Well done.

I have purchased this calendar for several years. Both Boris and Julie are great artists. Attention to detail makes the characters come alive. I really enjoyed the calendars that followed a script line, but even the newer ones with various story lines are wonderful. I use the characters to allow me to dive into story details for my own writing. These are wonderful for bringing my mind's eye characters into sharp definition.

I buy a Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell every year for my son and daughter-in-law. They really like the looks of all the pages and the front. I go through and put on all the birthdays for family and friends and then I decorate them. My daughter-in-law, specifically enjoys getting them with the dates every years.

Boris always delivers. Wish I could do auto send each year.

This was another pleasant surprise for me. I found this book in a Little Free Library kiosk. It was the only one that looked as if it might be readable. I picked it up and then put it back. I continued on my neighborhood walk. When I returned, I reluctantly took it with me; I simply needed a book to read before my next order would arrive. From the moment I began, I couldn't put it down. I so enjoyed the characters and their descriptions, as well as the honesty that was portrayed. As the story unfolded, I didn't want to be disturbed. I didn't even want another sale to handle at my husband's art fair -- I only wanted to see if Samantha would finally realize that King is absolutely perfect for her. What a delightful book! I've added other Elizabeth Berg books to my wish list.

Really good depiction of a woman trying to adjust after her husband leaves her. Berg is a very good writer, a keen observer of humans, and she has a wicked sense of humor. Who doesn't love the idea of a woman taking in boarders and turning them into family? Plus a happy ending.

This was a choice from my book club, and I'd never heard of the book or the author. Thus, my expectations were low, and I'm happy to admit, wrong.. Not only was the book insightful and beautifully written, it had a laugh-out-loud telephone conversation. The author's playwritiiting experience shines through with crisp dialogue and delightful scenes. A pleasure to read!

Elizabeth Berg is my favorite author, hands down. I don't think there is anyone more talented at putting words together to form the most breathtaking sentences. Her latest book is no different.However, "Open House" also has to be one of the funniest books I have ever read! I never pegged Berg as a humorist, even though there are a lot of ironic moments in her writing. But this book made me laugh so hard I almost peed in my pants. I found the chapter on Thanksgiving especially funny- I laughed for a half an hour, cracking up so hard I was crying. And there is a special treat for martha Stewart fans in the book, as well :).You have to be a talented writer to mix comedy and heartbreak as well as Berg does. For those worried about this being another woman-as-victim book (man leaves woman after several years of marriage, woman survives shame and loss of identity, finds new love with strapping, younger man who also happens to be her gardener, etc)- fear not. There is not an ounce of that in this book. "Open House" is funny, insightful, and will not leave you putting the book down in disgust.I really thought Elizabeth Berg may have lost her touch with "Until the Real Thing Comes Along" (her last book) but I have regained my faith in her. She's such an amazing writer. While "Pull of the Moon" and "Range of Motion" are my all-time favorites, this book is one I will be sending to friends and family- male and female alike.Buy it- you'll love it in every way.

This is my favorite of all Elizabeth Berg's books. It was the first one I read, and made me a huge fan. Berg captures the angst of the everyday woman, caught up in living life, that she misses the messages all around her. Stunned with the betrayal of her husband, she is reeling with insecurity. Her life ripped out from under her, she must mend her heart, and learn to trust not only other people, but herself as well. A moving book, you will laugh and cry and finally cheer right along side of Sam as she grows before your eyes.

OK. This is not the "Great American Novel." However, it is a fun story with entertaining characters. While some of it is a little predictable, this did not detract from the fact that is a fun and, in the end, uplifting book.Samantha ("Sam") has been married for about 20 years, when her husband, David, decides to move out and seek a divorce. Sam is devastated, especially since David refuses to really talk about it (dare I say like most men?). Sam's "support team" includes an outspoken, headstrong best-friend, her quirky mother, and a other entertaining characters who help change her life for the better.This is a quick, fun, and even thought-provoking read about why we get into, stay and end relationships.

OPEN HOUSE is a story of a 40-something woman going through divorce. Sam (Samantha) and her young son Travis learn to deal with life without David and they dont' find it easy. Travis seems to do ok but doesnt' quite adjust to living with new roommates. And Sam is always thinking about David, either hating him or missing him. Between bouts of crying and feeling lonely, Sam learns to survive emotionally (and financially) without the man she had depended on for almost 20 years.Sam learns to cope with divorce with the help of some new friends - Lydia, an elderly lady who becomes her first new boarder; King, a large over weight but gentle man who becomes her best friend; and Edward, her third boarder who happens to be gay and helps Sam with one final push towards happiness and new found love.I enjoyed this book, which was the second Elizabeth Berg novel I've read so far. Despite the theme of divorce, I felt it was a much lighter book than the first book of hers I read, WHAT WE KEEP. Ms Berg knows how to bring alive her characters, and she makes me care about what happens to each of them. I would definitely recommend this book.

I love most of the selections on the Oprah book list, this being one of them. The author does a great job of letting us see the real emotions of a women going through the journey of rediscovering herself after her husband leaves her.

This is awesome for teaching developmentally delayed children. My son is autistic and has trouble understanding complicated ideas. This book is great with simple drawings of molecules and elements. I am so glad I found this because I wanted to introduce him to science subjects but most of them are way too complicated for him. The only thing that bugs me is that it doesn't have page numbers but I will deal with it.

I liked this book alot. I'm 10 yrs old. I enjoyed learning all about atoms and protons. I learned what an atomic number is which is the amount of protons in the atom. I hope you make more books like this.

My 5 year old really loves science and I bought her a few chemistry books but none as fun as this one! Ok, I never really liked chemistry so my knowledge is very limited but I would say this is a great starting book on chemistry for little ones. Will get others from same author.

LOVE this book and my six year old does too! Will be getting more from this series.

April Chloe Terrazas really hit the nail on the head with her Super Smart Science Series. These books are wonderful. Brightly colored with pronunciation guides, simplistic pictures and just the facts, Chemistry is a great choice for the budding chemist! Also, puts great emphasis on the individual atoms so you may just have a young Einstein on your hands!

My granddaughter is so smart, but often goes unchallenged. She is like a little sponge, so when she got her hands on this book, she ate it up. Don't wait until your kids are older to introduce them to Science.

Great book. A little smaller than i thought it would be.

I agree with other reviewers that Mr. Ashura clearly either did some major research or was tapping into real life experience of High School joy and angst in this book. I was in school just a couple of years before this setting, but found myself very personally involved in some of the characters lives and walking down memory lane. His descriptions of events were spot on in my estimation. I thought he messed up on the date of one thing in this book (which is perfectly fine for fiction) but after research I was mistaken.The first thing I noticed about this book was that it started much darker than the previous series (Castes and OutCastes) by this author. The first chapter set the tone for the villains for this book and it was very dark. By the second chapter I thought this was to be a novel for young adults and very uncomplicated. When I continued reading, I found that it was very enjoyable to a middle aged guy like me. I believe that this series will have enough story to interest all ages of readers. The story was very well written and seems to flow well. I read the entire thing almost in one sitting as I didn't wish to put it down. While we are really just being introduced to this cast of characters in this new series, the major players were well fleshed out for the most part and of course there are the mysteries for future works. That being said this book had an enjoyable fitting conclusion or really just a stopping point, which I love in a series. I really hate the cliff-hanger and wait a year to continue type series. I look forward to continuing with this series and I am anxiously awaiting the next book. The action is excellent and I am most anxious to see where the romance relationship is going. I also love the crossover from Mr. Ashura's previous series and would have never guessed that it could have crossed over with one of my favorite characters. 5 stars, well done and what I have come to expect from this author.

I was honored to be granted the opportunity to listen the audiobook of William Wilde and the Necrosed by Davis Ashura, narrated by the sublime Nock Podehl. Nick's performance confirms that he, once again, deserves the credit given him as one of the top narrators in fantasy today.Fans of Rick Riordan, Suzanne Collins, and Brandon Mull will find a new home with The Chronicles of William Wilde. Those who loved Indiana Jones, the Goonies, and E.T. as kids will also get lost in this Urban Fantasy.This story is magical. Both literally and figuratively. Ashura has managed to unfold an adventure to us that bridges the generational appeal, promising to delight middle-aged audiences all the way down to high school audiences, much the same way that STRANGER THINGS has done. As a 40-year-old, I found myself living in a nostalgic time through the story, with all the 80's references, while not being able to take the ear buds out as the plot sped along. The magic system is just being introduced, and we get to learn with the characters. For a while, I wasn't sure who was on whose side. With a fair amount of twists and discovery, hints of teenage love, and plenty of adventure, William Wilde and the Necrosed promises a rollercoaster thrills to a wide audience. You will not be disappointed.

William Wilde and the Necrosed is a book that has magic, mystery, and action in equal parts. The setting is a large American city in the mid-1980s, and to make it as realistic as possible, the author clearly did some research, as well as draw from his own memories. There are plenty of references to 1980s pop culture, similar to what I and other readers enjoyed about Ernest Cline’s novels (Ready Player One and Armada). I enjoyed reading The Castes and the Outcastes trilogy by Davis Ashura, and I definitely like this first book in the author’s new series about William Wilde. The characters are likeable and well fleshed-out in straightforward prose, with plenty of amusing banter among good friends, which was one of the aspects I really liked about The Castes and the Outcastes. In fact, one of the characters from The Castes and the Outcastes shows up in this book, which is a real treat. I like Brandon Sanderson’s different systems of magic in Elantris and the Mistborn series, so I also like the unique systems of magic and fantasy world-building novels of Davis Ashura. Even though this is the start of a series of books, it has a satisfying ending to stand on its own, along with the promise of more magic, mystery, and action in future books.
