Bought this for son's college drumming class. He says it is a very good book for aspiring drummers. It was required by the professor.

Positively brilliant! The CD is invaluable, practice time is of course at a premium, makes practice both possible and productive. The music is more principle than excellence. It's simple and inspiring to make you want to innovate.

From the standpoint of someone wanting to learn something about jazz bass lines, this book is next to useless. Only a few of the CD tracks are jazz tracks, but those don't have written bass lines. Warrington offers written example bass lines for the other genres of music this book and CD cover (rock, funk, latin, etc.), but not for the jazz tracks. All he offers in writing for the jazz bass tracks are the chord changes. Amazingly, Vol. 2 of this work--published two years later--is the same way.You say, well, he must have intended that we supply our own bass lines for the jazz pieces, so he gave us no bass lines intentionally? I think that is obviously NOT the case. Take this line from Vol. 2 regarding the Medium Jazz track:"Notice that you never find two adjacent chords with the same bass note." And later in that same paragraph:"Notice here how the bass comes down out of the high register into the walking line."You can't notice ANY of those things in the charts because there ARE NO written bass notes. Zero. Zip.To be fair to Warrington, he must have been listening to and talking about his own recorded-audio bass lines in order to describe them in that way. But why those bass notes didn't make it into print in the finished book is hard to conceive. And why he didn't notice it himself even in Vol. 2 published two years after the first gaffs in Vol. 1 is even more difficult to figure.

And she's using it all the time and I've had other musicians tell me that this is an excellent book for percussionists.

This book could have easily won a 4 or 5 star rating from me, but there is one serious deficiency in this book --- huge portions of what is actually being played is not transcribed. This may be more of a problem for the bassists who are interested in this book, since the drum parts generally are static most of the time. For the first half of the book the bass transcriptions range from very good (and complete) to partial transcriptions ranging from just a couple bars to several bars transcribed while several bars are just left blank, for you to figure out by ear. For nearly the entire second half of the book, the bass player / transcriber (could be a different person I suppose) just decides to entirely stop transcribing the bass part. That's right, for about half the tunes in this book they do not even bother transcribing the bass part. By today's standards, where any guitar / bass book you purchase will have full transcriptions as well as TAB and recordings.....this just doesn't cut it. Yes, even just listening to the tracks could be educational, but.....if I wanted to just learn by listening, I would actually just go buy some CDs of my favorite artists, and do just that....The entire point of purchasing an instructional book is defeated by this lack of complete transcriptions in this book.The book is more orientated towards blues / funk / jazz styles, which is fine, but there are also many other styles that would make this book more complete and useful as a reference. All of the tracks on the CD are of top quality and true to the styles they represent and are the main reason for the 3 stars in my rating.Another deficiency is the total lack of explanation of what the bass player is thinking or doing when creating the bass lines. What scales are being used, or theoretical tools, etc...Yes for some, just hearing an example and learning it by ear is enough, but for others like myself I do like to know in more depth what is going on with the scales and harmony.If you just want to sample and hear different styles, with minimal instructions on how to reproduce it yourself, then you can't go wrong with this book as all the examples are excellent and the playing and recordings are of top quality. If you like to have a bassline fully transcribed, and some explanation as to why the bassist chose the notes or rhythms he did, then this book will fall short. The small amount that is transcribed is in standard notation only, so for those of you who don't read standard notation that would be another reason not to buy it.

I was looking for "real" poetry in a book intended for children. In other words, poems by known authors which would be appreciated by adults, but with themes and forms suitable for children, with pleasing rhythms and imagery, presented with attractive illustrations. The example in my mind was "The Daffodils" (aka "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud") by William Wordsworth.This book is pretty good, and even includes "The Daffodils." If it included only the best of its content, I'd give it 5 stars. Lots of good selections and sweet illustrations. I could skip some of the odd doggerel and weird themes. Fortunately my son seems to have some taste (and perhaps picks up on our dampened enthusiasm) and doesn't ask for the lesser stuff repeatedly. He enjoys this poetry collection (at age 2), and so do we.

I am thrilled with this book of poetry for my 2.5yo. The pictures are nostalgic and keep her attention while I'm reading both the short and longer poems. The artwork alone is very engaging and keeps her attention for sometime.To be honest, I have never really enjoyed poetry myself, but this collection is filled with sweet little pieces I remember from childhood, and I find the collection to be very enjoyable. Much of what I read to her she doesn't understand, but she actively chooses this book at storytime and requests I repeat particular selections.We have recently checked out several poetry and nursery rhyme collections from the library, including A Child's Garden of Verses, Richard Scary's Nursery Rhymes, Julie Andrews' compilations, and Carolyn Kennedy's Poems to Learn by Heart. While we love them all, I am partial to this collection at the moment! I am very glad I purchased this copy for our personal library.

Beautiful book. Font is clear and eay to read, the illustrations are in color and black and white.

I love Gyo Fujikawa's artistry. She was one of the first to include multiple races in her children's books in the 1950s when this was not popular so I also really respect her as a person and visionary. I bought this book because my 2.5 year old son loves her other book, Are You My Friend? and we have lots of interesting discussions about the scenes depicted on the pages. I hoped to do the same with this one but found 3 of the pages too intense. I will be saving this book for when my son is older. I've shared images from the pages I think would not be appropriate for toddlers.

I absolutely love the poems and illustrations in this book; they're spellbinding. I've read most of the poems in this book at least 15 times to my kids. It's my favorite book to read to them before bedtime if they're not awake enough to listen to a longer story. I've given several copies of this book to friends with children as gifts. I've bought a few other children's poetry books with good reviews but this one is by far my favorite. Some reviews say the poems are too babyish and others say the language might be archaic. I disagree with both views wholeheartedly. The poems and artwork are perfect!

I very rarely purchase books new. I made an exception for this book and I was not disappointed in my investment. We’ve had this book for two years now and use it regularly. The illustrations are just lovely. The number of poems is abundant. This book would be a lovely addition to any home library.

High Quality! The illustrations, choice of words, and overall presentation in this book is amazing. I remember LOVING this book as a child, so much that it must have stuck in my head because when I had my baby I couldn't wait to find this gem and share it with him. He's only 2 months old and it absolutely captivates his attention beyond anything I've seen. He literally "reads" this book because its made up of so many descriptive images. We spend minutes on each page, and I can tell that the images and scenes are engaging his mind because he reacts accordingly. For example, the colored J page is of a bunch of babies and animals jumping. He always starts to bounce and jump when we get to this page. Just amazing!

My daughter was given this book when she was little and she thoroughly enjoyed it. The illustrations alone are worth the price, but the choices used to illustrate the letters are not the usual common ones. Oh, there might be an umbrella on the U page, but there will be many other delightful and some unusual examples as well. I gave this book to my granddaughter and now to my grandson and I may give one to myself just to enjoy with visiting children. Also, to be sure I have one if they get hard to find. Delightful and different ABC book. This author has a book of children's poetry with the same type of whimsical illustrations and I can recommend that one as well, especially for children who are past the A to Z phase.

His underwater shots of beautiful models in crystal-clear waters were sent out on wire services and helped establish Silver Springs as Florida's premier tourist attraction. In the 1950s, his work helped lure the postwar generation to a land of fantastic, tropical, and mass-produced amusement. Silver Springs's popularity never depended upon parrots, monkeys, alligators, airboats, water-ski shows, or models dressed as mermaids. Instead, its appeal was primarily beneath the surface of the water, with cruises on glass bottom boats the major attraction. Mozert was Silver Springs's official photographer for nearly forty-five years, and his images were designed to sell the park. This is not your typical underwater photography coffee table book!! It is a quirky collection of carefully-posed photographs taken for crowd-pleasing effect, made for publicity pictures and postcards at Silver Springs. The effects are variously surreal, amusing, risque and kitsch. The photographer Bruce Mozert spent an entire career thinking of wacky scenes to shoot, and some of the ideas are brilliant. It's also a testament to the photographer's professionalism and achievement in making the best of the practical constraints (shallow fresh water, breath-holding models, buoyancy). The photographer and the models obviously had a lot of fun doing it. It's great fun to read. There are no stunning world-class masterpieces of technique or artistry here, but there's a style that grows on you. And to my surprise, there are a couple of hidden gems about underwater photography technique. Most of all - you're supposed to enjoy it.

Wonderful book. It's mainly a picture book, but has a nice history of the Silver Springs park.

As a busy academic, I hardly read a book word by word. Ian Johnson’s The Souls of China, however, is one of those books that I’m willing to read so closely. This book will help you better understand – even challenge your old knowledge on – what “religion” is, what China is, and how contemporary faith is practiced by ordinary Chinese people.The topic of the book – religion – is heavy, but the book itself is easy to read. Johnson strategically chooses three groups of ordinary people to tell a consistent story – the spiritual revival after Mao – that is big enough to reflect the “soul(s)” of contemporary China. Many readers might have read much about Chinese “Culture” (with a capitalized C), but very few books in the market do a good job detailing how Chinese “Culture” is perceived and practiced in everyday life and thus become Chinese cultures that really matter for most ordinary people. In his sophisticated writing, Johnson presents us Chinese religious beliefs through the Ni family in Beijing that makes an annual pilgrimage to a Buddhist temple that worships Our Lady of the Azure Clouds, the Li family in Shanxi that practices a form of family-based Daoism and folk religion, and a group of Protestant Christians in a house church in Chengdu led by a charismatic preacher Wang Yi. These stories Johnson brilliantly narrates in the book are so intriguing that I sometimes thought I was interacting with these people directly.Johnson shows his wisdom from the mundane details of ordinary people’s everyday lives. I am going to keep this review short for fear of gushing over the writer's masterful prose, grit and clarity both, and the broad conceptual umbrella he spreads over developments in China that would take a smorgasbord of academic essays to cover. Suffice to say Mr. Johnson has both the breadth of intellect to see what's going on in macro terms and the compassionate humanity and insight to make his observations personal, tangible, and memorable. Despite my voracious appetite for books about Chinese culture, history, and philosophy, I can't say I've ever read a better one. If you want to understand rarely covered but real and important undercurrents in China today, buy this book and devour it.

We’ve seen several academic books about religion in contemporary China in recent years, but this look at Chinese religious practice by the American journalist Ian Johnson is both well researched and highly accessible. Like other books by journalists living in China, “Souls of China” features first-hand accounts that bring a kind of intimacy and immediacy that the general reader finds engaging. In Johnson’s book, these passages are not ends in themselves, but serve to illustrate Johnson’s thesis about the state of religion in China today. When he joins in on a Buddhist pilgrimage or a Protestant Christmas Eve service, Johnson reveals a society hungry for meaning beyond that which a free market and Communist ideology can provide. “I know there’s something bigger than us that guides us,” says one of his subjects (p. 174).Johnson says that the aspirations of the people in his book can be summarized by the word “Tian” or “Heaven.” By this he means that they seek justice and respect, and a well-ordered society. The author goes on to say that this yearning for justice, order, and meaning may help transform Chinese society, perhaps not in the way that Buddhism and Taoism transformed Taiwan into a democracy, but that in the long-term will influence China to embrace shared universal values and morality. President Xi, who has demonstrated a willingness to be heavy-handed in his control of Chinese society, at the same time seems comfortable with a certain level of religious practice, so long as the religion being practiced has Chinese characteristics and is overseen by one of the state bodies regulating religion (p. 356). In general, this means that Christianity, and especially Catholicism, have not fared well against the state apparatus. Nonetheless, the tolerance for some things religious has given all religious expressions a little more latitude than they may have had before.When it comes to Western-derived religions, Johnson devotes most of his space to Protestant sects; Protestantism, because it is decentralized and isn’t tied to a foreign base of influence, is thriving relative to the state-controlled Catholic Church, with its suspicious Vatican ties. It’s unfortunate there isn’t more on Catholicism given the rich history of the Catholic Church in China. (Johnson subsequently wrote about the Catholic Church in China in the Jesuit periodical, America, October 2, 2017.) You won’t find much about Islam in “Souls of China,” either.That being said, I truly enjoyed reading this book. Johnson is a fine stylist, his research is solid, and his understanding of Chinese culture refined. His explanation of the rise of religion in China today is very convincing. Moreover, his candor and respectfulness in dealing with his subjects makes this a very humane work, one that makes you care about the people he describes. In short, this is one of the best overall non-academic books on contemporary China and Chinese culture available in English.

Horrible book! If you want to write a business plan, don't think this book will help you. It was confusing, poorly laid out and doesnt give you anything to actually work with. I had a friend (MBA who writes plans for a living) look at this book. His reaction was total disgust.

Just got back from three weeks in Syria and Lebanon, using this LP guide. I tried to stay at the cheapest possible option for the cities I visited but splurged a few times on the restaurants. Prices are hopelessly out of date... for Syria cheap hostels/hotels 200% higher, restaurants about 50%, taxi fare 200%-up. Lebanon's price disparity wasn't quite as bad and may have been researched more recently. Curiously enough the prices for museums, historical sites, etc. were correct.City maps are awful, especially for the larger cities. LP doesn't include all the street names and in some cases not even all the streets. Get a local city map before walking around. Smaller maps for museums and sites are useful though.I did a lot of traveling by public bus and shared taxi. Syria built new bus stations in Damascus, Hama and Aleppo. LP was absolutely useless for logistics as a result.Now for the positives. Every English-speaking tourist in Syria seemed to have a LP so there doesn't seem to be any good alternative. Food, history, and sightseeing sections were great. I'm not sure about the shopping suggestions. I visited a few places but most offered stuff well out of my price range.I strongly recommend this book if you are on a guided tour and have hotels and transportation already arranged. It even recommends tea houses and massages where you can relax after a hard day's shopping, lucky you! On the other hand, if you are traveling independantly, go ahead and get this book... but double-check the logistics on the internet or with other travelers when you arrive.

Lonely planet is one of the only travel books I'll buy!

I have now used LPs to travel through over 60 countries around the world and I just cannot go to any other kind of travel book. It is simple, well written and great information to manage the logistics of travelling in countries which are either run-of-the-mill or more on the adventurous side. Do you have ot take the information (at times) with a grain of salt? Yes. Do you have to double check for yourself certain timings and specifics? Yes. But the books are not a 100% spot on guide (things change) - they are however written by passionate people who clearly love the countries they travel in, and this is infused in every page. For the Syria trip being planned, we only have about a week (the following week will be in Jordan) and the book has already assisted in in structuring a high level itinerary, deciding on boarder crossings, confirming we should fly into Damascus and out of Amman and guiding us re: Visa requirements, food, medical shots and relative ease of self travel in the countries. Not bad I say. Keep up the great work LP!!

Like always, Lonely Planet has problems updating their travel guides, but generally it is an easy to navigate source of information. I noticed that the list of hotels in the Lonely Planet guidebooks has become very limited and we often had to search for accommodation after arrival as the listed hotels tend to be booked out first. The "Getting There and Away" sections could be more specific as we never new where we had to go for a specific bus station. It would also be helpful to write these places out in Arabic, as many taxi drivers cannot read English letters.

I ordered this travel guide in anticipation of a group trip to Syria - Damascus, Palmyra and Aleppo. It contains a brief history of the country, good city/town maps (for more detail one needs a country/city map), layouts of important buildings, customs and cultural information, language, glossary and general, very useful advice. Suggested phrases in Arabic will come in handy. French is also spoken in Syria and I plan to use it when needed since I am fluent. I like this guide and it is not bulky.

It is a great book with great content, Damascus was a good high light. I am very looking forward to the new version of Syria Lonely Planet.Good buy! Happy customer.

"As you wish" is the response to most questions in Syria, making the LP Guide very necessary. It contains excellent information on rarer sites and ruins along with very good historical information about them.The hotel information was very helpful since good lodging in Syria can be hard to find. The information on the souks is very good for those that like to shop. Finally in the same vain, their food section was very helpful for different budgets.The LP Guide is more detailed than the new Neos Guide published by Michelin, but unfortunately the maps are awkward to read in the LP guide and the detail maps to some of the less well traveled sites are not very reliable and the directions are poor. (I searched for a specifically described site near Aleppo for over an hour.) Overall though, it contains very detailed information, which is definately necessary in Syria since one is unable to find such information locally without considerable effort. I would recommend the Neos Guide for an overview and quality maps, and the LP guide for more detailed information. Both guides are necessary for a meaningful and hassle free trip.

I only used a small section of this book, the section on Beirut, but it was a very useful guide that helped me make the most of my limited few days in the city, particularly the recommendations on fantastic hole-in-the-wall restaurants I would not have otherwise found. The only disappointment was that the author wrote that travelers should shun the public beach and head to one of the exclusive private beach clubs, but I found the public beach quite pleasant, particularly when trying to save money because Beirut isn't all that cheap.
