My girls loved these book and can’t wait for the next one. They are 6 & 8.

Great addition to the Hilda collection.

Its wonderful! But- the netflix logo on the front is printed on the cover and cannot be removed. Also the interior illustrations are printed in a sepia color pallet. Not bad, but not full color. Love this series and the artwork.

The illustrations in this book are sweet and imaginative!! The colors are perfect and the storyline is great.

There are at least five Hilda books. Each one comprises a complete story arc, but the set also establishes a larger continuing story. If you think of those five books as "albums", then this new book is composed of various "tracks" from the first of them that have been arranged to tell the beginning of that overall story. So, while the first Hilda book is about a rock troll, and the second Hilda book is about the Elf community around Hilda's home, this book just condenses those two complete stories and hints at the other stories to come. On the one hand that makes this book basically a single volume summary of the Hilda tales to date, but on the other hand that necessarily means that those tales have lost a certain amount of charm and depth, since they have had to be condensed pretty dramatically. To continue the album analogy, if you own all of the original albums, maybe you don't need the collected hits. But, if you want to introduce Hilda to someone or get them caught up or aren't willing to commit to buying five different books, this is a fine way to get a broad sense of Hilda and her world. This is the tie-in to the upcoming TV show based on the books, and so it almost had to lose a little bit in its development journey. That said, this book does a surprisingly good job of fairly presenting Hilda. It is a bit more text based than the originals, and that text is not by Hilda's creator, Luke Pearson. The illustrator is new as well. But, the drawings are remarkably close to Pearson's style, and the text is especially faithful to Pearson's storytelling. Unless you're a superfan of the originals you might not even notice the difference. (So maybe this is like an accomplished "tribute" album?)The big picture, though is that Hilda is an admirable and very appealing character - energetic, observant, assertive, independent, resourceful, and kind-hearted. Any Hilda is better than no Hilda, and this book is a perfectly fine way to meet her, to become acquainted with her charms, and to enjoy her adventures.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Hilda has been seen in graphic novels and now in a Netflix show, so her story is also appearing in tie-in chapter books. In this first title, Hilda is a curious blue-haired girl who decides to go out into the countryside and sketch pictures of rocks. But she spends the day hiking around and drawing different rock formations. Then she comes across one that she is sure is actually a troll turned to stone in the sunlight. On her way home, she comes across the footprints of a giant. There are already forest giants that Hilda knows about, but this track is much larger than anything they could make. She and her mother also have problems with elves. It seems that their house is in the territory of the elves who have now ordered the humans to leave, or else. Mom is determined to move to the town of Trolberg away from all the odd happenings and Hilda is just as determined to stay in the wild place she loves.Luke Pearson's illustrations capture the wide-eyed inquisitive nature of Hilda. Her artistic tendencies come through in her chic clothing (skirt, tights, boots, beret), as well as in her choice of leisure-time fun. The world Hilda lives in contains normal things like a home and a mother, but also odd creatures like giants, a wooden men, and trolls. She seems to take all her adventures in stride rather well. As she says, "What a noteworthy day." The color palette used for the book contrasts warm golden tones for the daylight and indoor scenes with blues and grays to capture the dreariness of rainy nights. The difference in the two settings emphasizes the cosyness one can bask in at such times.

I didn’t love this as much as the Netflix show, but it was still endearing! A trait that I really loved about Hilda from the show was how inherently kind she was, and unfortunately she seemed to be missing that in this novelization. She was still full of spunk, but not nearly as kind, and therefore didn’t feel entirely like Hilda. I also missed how supportive her mom was in the show. There weren’t many appearances of Hilda’s mother, but every time she popped up she seemed to be criticizing Hilda, and that really just made me so sad. This novelization did a great job of containing the same events that the series portrayed, while still bringing a fresh and fun twist to things. I adored the illustrations scattered throughout the text, and the binding of the book is absolutely beautiful. Not only is the dust jacket eye catching and fun to look at, but underneath is just as wonderful. I’m thankful they put so much care into this story and I loved being able to revisit these adventures in a different format while I wait for season two of Hilda on Netflix!

The anticipation for the release of Hilda on Netflix is palpable and as a deeply devoted Hilda fan family, we are loving the new installment of this chapter book that deepens the story and adventures.
