Like most Americans, my frames of reference for POWs tend to run from WWII to Vietnam, skipping a frame called Korea. For author Tom McDaniel, skipping that frame is too personal; he lost his father to an heroic effort to do what West Point trained Major McDaniel to do: lead. The starvation, the deprivations, the inhumanity of other POW experiences are all here, and then some. Tom makes those horrors vivid. As we would expect, much of it is not easy reading. Major McDaniel saved lives, but not his own. America owes unrepayable debt to men like The Major, who gave all. He was unlucky in many ways, but fortunate to have a son whose compelling book assures that he and his heroics will not be forgotten.
Offered information in detail that would require significant research to get elsewhere. Overly focused on specific army units that our POWs had been assigned to, without providing any meaning to that information. Gave interesting background, and post war experiences of Korean War early POWs. Showed impact it had on individuals. In the Kindle version I had, the maps were too small to be useful.
My brother was in the Korean war . He escaped but was beaten and spent a lot of time in the hospital before letting him come home. This book helped me realize what he went thru. I would recommend book
The most forgotten soldiers of the most forgotten war. Tom does an excellent job of reporting and telling the story of Korean War POWs. Truly a heroic story no longer lost to the annals of the Korean War. The Major: The Senior Officer In Charge: Commanding Fellow Prisoners of War
great
I have read this book a few times and I highly recommend this book. The author shares accounts from the Korean War and his fathers horrific capture and treatment he endured. Those parts were hard for me to read but it is a true account by people who witnessed his life. This is not just a book about torture, it is a true story about the life of a hero.Major William Thomas McDaniel was a true hero. A compassionate man that put others safety and wellbeing before his own. He was a man of great honor with love for his country and family. I think high school students should read this book to get a more personal look at someone who lived and died fighting for our country. I have often thought about how difficult it had to be for the writer to hear the stories of torture and then write about it because the author was writing about his own father. I admire this author and hope to see more books from him. The author is also a hero and veteran of our military.
Tom McDaniel is an Air Force Academy classmate of mine, and we have spent a lot of time together over the years. Until I read his remarkably insightful book about his father's horrific trials under captivity, however, I had not heard any part of this story. That alone speaks volumes about the forgotten experiences these captives endured even after their repatriation when and if that occurred. It also says much about the American citizenry who were exhausted following World War II and unwilling to support another combat scenario in a foreign, distant land. Nonetheless, the incredible challenges these prisoners faced serve as the backdrop to The Major's unimaginable story. He was not a hero or even the senior officer by choice. He was the bold and dedicated officer who exerted resourceful leadership in dire circumstances. In the process of exerting that leadership, he endured horrible punishment and worked tirelessly to shape events in chaotic and hellish times. His subordinates benefitted immensely with creative benefits, although on many occasions the major merely deflected torture and punishments upon himself. He was someone anyone would admire and follow to the end, a fate many suffered. This is a must read for those without good enough knowledge of the Korean War, its combatants, its objectives or its horrors. It might also provide perspectives on current North Korean aims and tendencies.
A well research and documented true story of one of our military heroes during the Korean Conflicts. The author, is the son of the Major. Very telling book.
